Beyond Metal by Making Memories

by Andrea Steed (Jul 30, 2003)

If you’re a fan of the Making Memories Details line of products, you’ve probably heard about their new idea book called “Beyond Metal.” My copy arrived a couple of days ago, and truthfully I was expecting just another idea book, with neat layouts made by talented people. I got so much more.

The 60+ page book includes seven chapters, each focusing on a different category of the Making Memories metal products. For example, Chapter 1 focuses on alphabet charms and the eyelet alphabets, Chapter 2 on metal frames, stitched tin tiles and eyelet charms, etc.

Fantastic designers such as Robin Johnson, Heidi Swapp and Emily Waters, along with the rest of the team of Making Memories designers, amazed me with the turn of every page. The layouts and project ideas were pleasantly unique and innovative. Their use of sandpaper, paint, and papers with the metal pieces was imaginative and simply gorgeous, making each project range in style from rugged to elegant. The full color photographs of the layouts and projects are crystal clear and show all of the little details in each project.

While the layouts and projects really are fantastic and inspiring, the format of this idea book is what really impressed me. It’s written with what Making Memories calls recipes. Each project has step by step detailed instructions for how it was created. Since the Making Memories designers pull out all the stops and wow you by using these products in truly innovative ways, the recipes make each project completely attainable for every scrapper. The writer, Erin Trimble, also includes tips and suggestions for using each product, giving you ideas for how to alter the look of them, how to best use them, and how to adhere them.

This is book is a definite must-have for any avid Making Memories metal collectors out there! The ideas for how to alter them and use them are simply fantastic. And if you aren’t quite sure about how to use them and have avoided the metal pieces so far…watch out! One look at this book, and you’ll be knocking down the doors of your local scrapbook store to try them out.
