Photographers Make Photos, Not Cameras

by Denise Gormish (Aug 4, 2007)

It has been said, "Don't judge the photographer by his camera, but by his photos." It is often a mistake to credit a great photograph to the camera and equipment, but all great photographs are the work of great photographers. While good equipment can be helpful in certain situations, a good photographer can work with any camera. What makes a good photographer? Here are some marks of a good photographer:

Artistic. Good photographers have a certain artistic eye that can see things. For some photographers this trait comes as naturally as breathing and they may not even understand it themselves. Other photographers learn how to see in a new way. The artistic side of photography involves composition, use of angles and lighting, and portraying the emotion or story in the moment.

Technically Savvy. Good photographers understand their camera - whatever camera they chose to use. They know how its mechanics work. They understand the camera's advantages and its limitations. In addition, they have knowledge of photography techniques such as composition, lighting, framing, etc.

Knowledgeable. Good photographers are always expanding their education. Through books, classes, online articles or message boards and studying the work of others, a good photographer keeps up with the new advances while improving his or her own skills.

Observant. Good photographers notice details in a person, landscape or object. Sometimes it takes patience, but good photographers will not rush through a photograph. They will take time to notice things that other people are not seeing. They see the details of the world as well as noticing the bigger picture. This is partially artistic talent but it also takes a large degree of patience.

Self-Critical. Good photographers look at their work and evaluate it. They pay attention to the details in what they see and they notice the flaws. By being self-critical they can understand and improve.

Experienced. Good photographers are good because they shoot a lot of photographs. They may take as many as 12 photographs of the same thing, trying to get the best shot. They are not afraid of tough situations such as high speed and low light. They experiment and discover what works with their equipment. All of this takes time and practice.

Good photographers can work with any equipment. They are not dependent on the camera as much as on their knowledge and their artistic eye. With patience and shooting experience, you can work on your photography skills, both artistically and technically.
