What's So Great About Digital?

by Andrea Steed (Mar 31, 2004)

For years, each time I get a roll of photos back from the developers, the first thing I did was scan each photo. There's something in me that likes having all of my photos available to me on my computer so that I can browse through them and organize them more effectively than if I looked through all of my photo boxes.

Now that digital photography has increased so much in quality, it was a logical switch for me. I was more than ready to trade in my film cameras for a new digital camera. Here are some of the reasons I decided to switch:

  1. I don't have to scan each of my photos anymore.

  2. I can print only the photos I need for albums, frames, etc. rather than having lots of extras that I don't use.

  3. There is instant gratification. I can see my photographs as I take them, rather than waiting days or weeks to finish and develop a roll.

  4. I know immediately if I've gotten a good photograph, and can re-shoot until it's just right.

  5. I can learn more about my camera and practice using it without spending money on film and developing.

  6. I can print photos in any size I want the first time. You'll be seeing a lot more 5 x 7 and 8 x 10 photos in my layouts!

  7. I can easily burn CDs of photos for friends and family, instead of having to take in negatives to have more prints made.

  8. I can upload my images to the web and have my prints sent directly to me. No more double-trips to the photo-developer.

  9. I can edit and crop my photographs before they are printed.

  10. I can stop accumulating photo boxes and store my photos on my hard drive and on CD-ROMs instead.

Two drawbacks to digital photography that I've heard people express concern about are the shutter delays and the red-eye problems. Depending on the camera you purchase, both can be reduced or even eliminated. The digital SLR camera that we decided on has virtually no delay and I've not noticed any red-eye problems so far!

Digital photography isn't for everyone, but when I weighed the options, it was a natural choice for our family. Once you get over the cost of the camera, the benefits are great! As a scrapbooker who takes photos nearly everyday, it's been an exciting and easy switch for me.
