A Scrap Space for My Style

by Denise Gormish (Aug 9, 2006)

Style plays an important part in our scrapbooks. The choice of papers, tools and embellishments all depend on personal style. I have found that if I don't have an item close at hand I am less likely to use it. So when arranging your scrap space consider which tools and supplies get used the most. Make a list, if necessary, to get a better picture of those tools and supplies. Then, considering your list, create a scrap space that makes those items the most accessible.

When designing my scrapbook space, I assessed my own style. I began by considering what furniture, tools, supplies and essentials I used the most. My list consisted of the following:

The two items on my list that took up the most space were the large area for layout design and the computer. With that knowledge, I considered how to make those two items the centerpieces of my scrap space. Ultimately, I placed my computer desk in the area that had the most space available. Since I have a swivel chair, I placed a large card table so that I could move between my computer and my scrap table with a simple twist of my chair. These two essential items took up most of my available space. I had a small 4' x 2' corner for the remainder of my supplies.

Two other important items were a variety of adhesives and a paper trimmer. Both items are placed on the scrapbook card table for easy reach. The adhesives are stored in a small basket so they don't get strewn everywhere.

To the right of my scrapbook card table is a metal frame with wire baskets. Since the baskets are made of wire and open, I can know immediately what is in them. For better organization a basket insert keeps items separated such as flowers, buttons, inks and stamps. I used the ANTONIUS storage series from IKEA.

Another category of items I wanted to keep on hand is the words and letters that I use on my scrapbook pages. For those items, I stored them in a 9-drawer tabletop system, also from IKEA. I used rub-ons to label categories for each of the drawers.

On top I keep my cardstock and patterned papers in a vertical metal file.

This organization of my scrap space has worked very well for me because it keeps all of the popular items conveniently close.

Take a moment to look at your scrap space and where the items are located. No matter what scrapbook style you embrace, you can create a scrapping space that will accent your style and make you more productive.
