My Sitting Room

by Julia Sandvoss (Jun 3, 2005)

I can no longer remember how it felt to scrapbook on my kitchen table. My brain has been so spoiled over the past three years! Thankfully when we relocated from Chicago to St. Louis we found the perfect house for our family and the perfect scrapbook solution for me! The home we purchased has a sitting room off our master bedroom. Although I tend to stand, not sit, in it while I work, it’s been the perfect place to store all of my scrapbook supplies.

Since moving in I have made several changes and I continue to update my storage needs, but it is a room that more times than not, my children and husband will find me in. The most important thing I did was to paint it a color that felt relaxing and served as a good backdrop to my projects. I looked to the ring my hubby gave me which is a Tanzanite and picked a color as close to it as I could. I love the way I feel around this color. To offset it are light green sheer curtains. The colors in the room are the exact reverse of my master bedroom making it a perfect complement!

Fortunately the previous homeowners had built shelves and a desk in a nook which gave me a great place to house my computer, printer, scanner and all that, along with three big shelves which hold all my albums, specialty albums and baskets with rub-ons and stamps.

An important piece of furniture in our first house has come to serve a new purpose as my desk. It was a workstation in our first home’s kitchen, which had limited counter space, but now provides me with the perfect spot to work. It has a butcher block as the main work area which comes in handy for all the banging and hard-hitting stuff we do! What is also nice is the large lower shelf, which holds all my cardstock. Some of it is organized in Generations keepers and my Bazzill and Doodlebug cardstock is all right smack in the center.

On top is another small shelf, which I would be lost without! The two blue drawer organizers hold sequins, beads, charms, all metal embellishments, shaped buttons, regular buttons, twine, raffia and the sort. The middle white organizer holds various alphabets, Doodlebug embellishments, KI icicles, more buttons, bottle caps and various tags.

On top of all those pieces are my baskets. I love baskets! The pink basket holds all my Close To My Heart (CTMH) inkpads. I like the basket since I sell for CTMH and can easily tote these with me to classes and crops. The polka-dot basket on the other side holds every type of adhesive known to man! The two middle striped containers hold cool tags and labels that I save off the kid’s clothes and the archival spray, pop dots and my Hermafix glue (so my 4 year old can’t keep unwinding them all over!).

The newest addition to my room is a set of three shelves that I bought at The Home Depot. I graduated them in size so they didn’t feel so big on my wall. The bottom shelf baskets hold ribbon on cards and miscellaneous things that I never know where to stick! The center white organizer I saw posted online and thought it a great idea. It holds all my loose ribbons organized by colors and type. I love this! I love to see everything in color order. (My clothes closet is this way too!)

The next two shelves hold my photo boxes, small alphabet stamps, ColorBox stamp pads, paints, CTMH items and my beginner class tote. Below the shelves, on my dresser, are my ribbon organizers for all spooled ribbon and my CTMH ribbons, my journals and a basket of photos that I am too lazy to reorganize back into those darn boxes!

To finish off the room is my armoire. It’s kind of scary how much it holds actually!

On the top shelf is all of my CTMH stuff. The second shelf holds all of my mini albums and mini-album monthly kits. The bottom shelf stores my KI collection of papers, SEI papers and BasicGrey. All my other patterned papers are in a Crop-In-Style Paper Taker. The two drawers are stuffed full of mementos, cards, special things the kids have given me and trip paraphernalia that I have held onto!

I won’t claim I am the most organized scrapper, but I just love having a space that I don’t worry about having to put away a project or clean it up for fear that someone will come in. I love having a spot to display some of the kids pieces of art that I really love. I tend not to clean up after every project and some days I lose my mind because I can’t find something I need, but all in all I love my sitting room and will happily stand anywhere in it!
