Guest Room Scrap Space

by Tara Daigle (May 10, 2005)

When we moved into our current home almost two years ago, I decided I would use a portion of our guest room as my scrap area. Several guests later, I changed my mind. I proceeded to move my scrap stuff to various areas of our home including the breakfast room, the boys’ playroom and I even tried to talk my husband out of his office. Since he works from home, he refused to move. And so I have ended up back in the guest room and am actually pretty happy there.

My desk:
I have a nice desk with plenty of drawers. In these drawers I store everything from photos to paper scraps to trimmers. On my desktop I keep pens and scissors in holders, and eyelets, brads, and buttons in stackable clear containers. These are items I use frequently and I like to have them close at hand. I also have a self-healing cutting mat to protect my work area. There is a bulletin board just above the desk where I stick photos I love and recent products that I purchased and want to remember to use soon.

Wall Shelves:
Above my desk is a set of shelves that were purchased at Lowe’s. The top shelf holds my CK magazines, more brads, eyelets, and some beads in stackable containers and a couple of favorite photos. On the bottom shelf are three containers from Pottery Barn. These are a great solution for me because I like for things to be organized, but if I can’t see it I won’t use it. These allow me to sift through and see what I have fairly easily. Hanging from the bottom of the shelves is a rack holding all of my acrylic paints. I found it at Linens ‘n Things and it’s one of my favorite parts of my scrap area.

Iris Cart and Paper Cubes:
Just to the left of my desk are my paper cubes from Target. I have my patterned paper organized by manufacturer with the scraps on top of each in a file folder. My cardstock is also in these cubes and it is organized by color. The basket on the bottom holds small, unused albums and the organizer on top holds metal letters, tags, and various other small, unpackaged embellishments. To the right of my desk is an Iris cart where I keep adhesives, larger embellishments and die-cuts, foam stamps, and card-making supplies.

Bookshelf:
I have a small bookshelf close by that holds magazines, idea books, and other supplies. The baskets on the bottom shelf hold my stamps and ink pads. Ribbon is on the top shelf in a Rubbermaid box and an organizer from Target. My fibers are just below the ribbon stored in an embellishment box. I have them wrapped around floss bobbins so I can see what I have. The trays to the right of that hold projects and things I am currently working on. My stickers are sorted by theme in binders on the middle shelf. I went to the binder system recently and it’s working so well. I have letter stickers in one binder sorted by color and other stickers in another binder sorted by theme. I just flip through and grab what I need.

My scrap area is a work in progress. I am always re-organizing and re-arranging things. I’d like to add better lighting and put some pretty paint on the walls eventually, but for now I am happy to have a place to call my own.
