Dining Room Scrapbook Nook
In what part of the house is your scrap space located?
My scrap nook is in our formal dining room. We have had a dedicated office in the last couple of houses but not this one. We hardly ever use the formal dining room anyhow--and it’s quite large with a nice bay window overlooking the backyard-- so I have made use of the back half and have a couple of screens set up so that my mess can be somewhat hidden.
How do you store the following items?
Cardstock
Since I scrap 8.5” x 11”, all of my cardstock is in the three file drawers, sorted by color. I also have a Paper Taker that holds my small stash of 12” x 12” cardstock. I use this for teaching classes.
Patterned Paper
All of my patterned paper is to my right on my bookcase in 2 wire cubes (from Target). It all used to be sorted out, some by color and some by company, but now it is all just a big mess, tossed up there. I just dig through it until I find something that catches my eye.
Magazines/Idea Books
I only keep the last year’s worth of magazines. I go through the older ones and tear out any pages that still catch my eye and keep them in my idea notebook. The rest of the magazine, I toss. Of course, I also keep those that I’ve been published in. The issues I’ve been published in are in the bookcases in my family room. I have become very selective in purchasing idea books, but those that I do buy I keep with my magazines as well. If I can’t seem to get going, I flip through my books, and find something to get going again. It could be an embellishment, a color scheme or just the placement of photos.
Stamps
I don’t have a huge stash of stamps so I am able to store them in a couple of drawers in a smaller bookcase that is behind me. My frequently-used inks are on top of my desk and the inks that I rarely use are in a drawer behind me.
Punches
I also don’t have a large amount of punches so they fit easily into one little drawer. My kids like to dig through the stamps and the punches and play with them.
Die cuts, Pre-made Embellishments, Stickers
All of these products go in a big plastic box that I keep right behind me on the top of my small bookcases. I just dig through them until I find what I am looking for. Sometimes, I find things I forgot I had.
Alphabet Stickers
Ok, I admit, I have a fetish for alphabet stickers! I love them! I keep them in an even bigger plastic box right behind me.
Fibers
I don’t use my fibers as much since I now have an addiction to ribbon!! I keep my fibers sorted by color, in a notebook, tucked in baseball cardholder page protectors.
Ribbon
You all know I have a thing for ribbon! I used to keep it all smooshed in a drawer, but now I have it out in three jars where I can admire it. I have made a promise not to buy more until I use up some of these that I have collected.
Embellishments
I have embellishments all over the place. Some of my favorites are in a small bank of drawers right on my desk while others are stored in plastic bins behind me in my bookcase. I’m not the type that needs to have every little thing in its place (at least in my little scrap area---the rest of the house is another story!) so I tend to stash things here and there. Thankfully, my memory is pretty good so it doesn’t take me long to remember where I put something.
Tools
I keep my frequently-used tools in my top left drawer; things like my Hermafix and other adhesives, stapler, Pop Dots, my date stamp, my candy stash, the Dymo label maker, sandpaper, my Making Memories tool kit, glue dots, etc. All kinds of odds and ends get tossed in there.
I also use a Pampered Chef turning organizer. I keep tools such as rulers, pens, scissors, Q-tips, tweezers, wire cutters, extra eyelet tools, another hammer, Making Memories rub-on alphabets, a wire brush and all kinds of other things in there.
I use a Carl paper cutter and I keep it on top of a small Iris cart. When I’m scrapping, I just pull the cart alongside me so that my cutter is accessible. I keep more ribbons and fibers in the top drawer of the cart. The second drawer has a small cutter, the Fiskars cutter, my glass mat and other miscellaneous tools. The bottom drawer is just full of stuff. I know there are Ziplock bags in there and I’m not sure what else.
Scrap Paper
I keep my scraps (and they have to be at least 3” x 4” or they’re trashed) in a hanging file bucket under my desk. I usually get a big stack piled up on top of the bucket before I break down and file it. Once I do finally file it, I sort the papers out by basic color families and tuck it in there. Whenever I need a little piece, I dig in there first before cutting up a big piece of cardstock or pattern paper.
There you have it--a little look into my space. Of course I would love a space right out of Pottery Barn – maybe someday!
