Bin Organizer for Your Scrap Space

by Patter Cross (Mar 5, 2008)

Have you ever gotten rid of storage pieces from your child's room? Hold off next time! Have you seen a great child's storage unit at a garage sale but passed it up? Well, don't! I am here to show you how I transformed my daughter's toy bin for my scrap room.

The Before
Being thirteen, one of my daughters decided she did not want her toy bin anymore. I immediately thought this would be a great item to use in my scrap room. Here is what it looked like before:

2_60I was concerned about the brightly colored bins, and I did not know how I would paint them. My husband looked into it and found out that Krylon makes a spray paint just for plastics. It is called Krylon Fusion. It comes in many colors, it does not require any sanding or priming, and dries in 15 minutes. Sounded perfect to me. But the tough part came when I had to decide what color to paint the bins. My favorite color is pink so of course, I immediately wanted pink. After much thought, I decided that would be a bad choice. What if I wanted to change colors in my room? Would I really want to repaint these bins? No! So, I settled on brown. Sounds boring but they actually match the furniture in my room. Here they are shortly after painting:

Finishing the Project
The next decision was how to spice this piece up a bit. I decided to get some ribbon and tie it around each bin adding a little color and fun. Of course this was the perfect way to introduce some pink. Ribbon would also be an easy way to change colors in the future if I wanted to. Unfortunately, each small bin required two yards of ribbon. So that idea was out. I finally settled on tying ribbon on the bars. It worked perfectly. Here is the finished piece.

Then I wanted to label each bin so I hung a tag from each ribbon with a label.

Currently I am storing the following in each bin: acrylic stamps, foam stamps, 6" x 6" paper pads, baby wipes, American Craft thickers, items to be altered, foam sheets, and Maya Road chipboard, and I still have several bins that are empty. This piece is going to work really well. I am so glad I decided to keep it.

Look through your children's rooms. Do they have a great storage piece that is not being used anymore? Grab it! Or next time you hit a garage sale, look at the storage units. Is there something that you could use for your scrap room? Start looking, altering, and having fun!
