Photo Storage

by Andrea Steed (Mar 31, 2004)

I tend to use nearly all of my photos in my albums. However, I always have extra doubles or a few photos left over that I don't use. Since I certainly wouldn't dream of throwing them away (you never know when you might need them) a storage solution for those photos was necessary.

Here are a couple of ideas for photo storage and organization:

Storage

  • Photo boxes with index dividers. I store all of my extra photos in photo boxes that fit 4" x 6" photographs. (Any larger photos are stored in a larger flat box, or a panoramic photo holder.) Index dividers divide the photographs by year, with a short list of the activities featured. Photos of individual events are stored in archival envelopes labeled with the date, event and people in the photos. Photo boxes are great because they store quite a few photos per box, and they can be stacked for more convenient storage.

  • Photo albums with labels. If you'd prefer to have the photos more accessible to look at, photo albums with protective sleeves might be a better option for you. Many albums come with a space to label the photographs with a date and comments.

Organization

  • By date. If you organize your photos as they are developed, chronologically may be the easiest way for you to organize them-simply adding them to a box as they are developed. If you're going back and organizing old photos, divide them first by year, then by season, and then by month and date if possible. Doing this part in stages makes it slightly less overwhelming.

  • By person. If you're creating albums for your children or are organizing old photos and want to create albums that aren't event-specific or chronological, organizing by person is a great way to sort your photos. A box for each person makes finding photos for an individual's album much easier. After they are organized by person, you might want to sort them by date or by event.

  • By event or subject. Another way to organize your photos is categorize them by event or subject. For instance, some possible categories would be New Years, Birthdays, Easter, Summer, Vacation, First Day of School, Baby, etc. This is especially helpful is you create holiday albums or like to do pages of similar subjects spanning over multiple years or dates.
