Embellishment Storage

by Andrea Steed (Mar 31, 2004)

If you're like me, you've started collecting a lot of little embellishments: buttons, brads, eyelets, fibers, beads, glitter, wire…well, you get the idea. These teeny tiny little items are great to use on your pages, but can be hard to keep organized. I've gone through a couple of different organization methods for my stash of embellishments, which have all worked wonderfully to keep me organized.

Plastic organizers - These little plastic containers with small compartments and a snap-shut lid are great for storing embellishments. They come in all different sizes, shapes and can be stacked easily. Some have handles or totes to hold many of them at once. These can usually be found in craft stores, hardware stores, and other department stores with a craft section. Really, the options in this category are nearly countless.

Caboodle - Remember those old Caboodle makeup and jewelry organizers? My mom found a giant one at a yard sale for me just after I started scrapbooking. I was so excited! It held all of my embellishments perfectly in the various sized compartments, and it even had a handle, so it was easy to transport. Unfortunately, the real "Caboodles" are hard to find now, but you can use tool boxes and tackle boxes in the same way. This method of storage is great for people who do most of their scrapbooking at crops or other places where they need to transport their supplies.

Hardware store drawers - This is what I currently use for my embellishments. These sets of drawers in two different sizes are perfect for my small embellishments. Each drawer is removable, so it's easy to reach all of the little pieces. I bought the sets of drawers at a local hardware store. Instead of using it to sort screws and nails, I'm sorting my scrapbook embellishments! Both shelves fit on my desk, right in front of my scrap space, so I'm able to see and reach everything as I'm scrapbooking.

Some other suggestions would be to use empty film canisters (we all have those), old spice jars and a spice rack, bead organizers, pill holders, or small zip-lock baggies. However you organize them, the idea is to have them easily accessible so that you can USE all of those great embellishments you've been collecting!
