Organizing Digital Products

by Denise Gormish (Jan 24, 2011)

One of the biggest challenges in scrapbooking is to keep all your supplies organized. It can be a challenge with digital scrapbooking products as well. The key to keeping your digital products in order is to organize them into a scheme that makes sense to you and then keep your items updated in that scheme.

There are many schemes for organizing your digital products. It is helpful in whatever system you use to create one large “Scrapbook” folder, and then subfolders for various topics. You can use more than one method, depending on your needs. To store your products and organize them you can put them into folders on your hard drive. Those who have a PC may choose to use PSE Organizer. Those with a Mac may want to use iPhoto or Bridge. These programs help you to view and search for items.

How you want to organize your digital supplies is directly related to your own personality and scrapping style. Here are a few filing options for organization.

Kits. When getting a digital kit that has several items all in the same theme and colors, file the kits together. Have a place where all the kits are kept together. If you have a lot of kits you can organize them by color schemes, themes or designer.

Designers. Alternatively, you can file items together by keeping kits and products by each designer together in one place. Your filing system would be according to which designer created the kit or product. That way all items by a certain designer would be together.

Types. Another way to file products is by type of item. In this method each item is separated from the kits and all designers are mixed together. Instead of kits or designers being together, all items of the same type are together. Subfolders would hold each type of product. Types include alphabets, fabric, flowers, paper, templates and word art.

You can further break down your folders as necessary. For example the “Paper” folder can be broken down into various colors.

At the final level the items are visible.

Whichever scheme you use for organizing your digital scrapbook products, make sure it makes sense to your way of thinking and how you would be looking for something as you create. In addition, remember to keep one copy of each designer’s terms of use so you will have that information when you need it.

New Products. After organizing all your products, it is essential to keep them organized. If you purchase an item and don’t have time to file it right away, then put it in a special folder called “New Products.” Then, you can go back to that folder when you have time to file the products.

With all these ways of organizing all your digital products, you’ll be able to find what you need right when you sit down to scrapbook.
