Father’s Day Gift Idea

by Denise Gormish (Jun 14, 2006)

Each year on Father's Day my daughters give their dad a gift. Often it's a homemade gift that tells him how they appreciate him. They are sweet and fun gifts to be treasured.

It's great but it really doesn't give me a chance to tell my husband how much I appreciate him as a father. This year I decided to make something for him from myself. I found a six-sided acrylic photo/sign holder at the office supply store. This simple object became the inspiration for the following project.

To make my Father's Day project I used the following steps:

  1. Create Text. Before creating your project, chose what you want to say. In this project, the words are very important. Before starting anything else write down the journaling. Choose a topic and carry it through the whole project. I started with a letter to my husband and continued my thoughts throughout the remainder of the pages. I decided I wanted to thank him for the things he does as a father and highlight a few of them. I wrote the text before I choose photographs, papers and embellishments.

  2. Select Photographs. Search through your digital and printed photographs for appropriate photos to match your text.

  3. Crop White Cardstock and Photographs. Consider the size of your project then cut white cardstock and photographs to fit that size. The photo/sign holder fit 4" x 6" elements so I cut white cardstock in that size for the background. Since the horizontal side was 4 inches I had to either cut the photographs 4 inches wide or print them at 4 inches wide.

  4. Choose Color Scheme. Select the colors you want to use for your project. For a Father's Day project, you might consider more masculine colors instead of pinks. Maybe your husband has a favorite color and you want to carry that color through the project. I chose my colors from some American Crafts ribbon.

  5. Add Text. Print or handwrite your text on the pages. I placed my text at the top, so it would be easy to read from top to bottom.

  6. Mat Photographs. Using one of the colors from your color scheme, mat your photographs. A thin mat will make the photographs stand out against the white background.

  7. Choose Embellishments. With your color scheme in mind chose some embellishments for your projects. Do you love flowers, hearts or buttons? Look through your stash. You're sure to find something there! Also consider techniques you might want to use. Do you love painting, inking or paper tearing? Use them if they will enhance your project. Place your embellishments on the page. I used ribbon and flowers with a clean style.

  8. Assemble Project. With all your decisions made, complete the project. For my finishing touches, I included signatures and placement of the pages in the acrylic photo/sign holder.

If you don't have a photo holder the pages could easily be included in a small photo book or flip album.

This project isn't limited to just your husband. It could be completed for a father, father-in-law or any male figure. Think of anyone who could use an uplifting word on Father's Day. With this project, you can make a fun, attractive display for any father in your life.
