Mother’s Day Gifts

by Tiffany Roberts (May 10, 2006)

There are a few universal truths in this world: puppies are cute, politicians lie, and mothers love handmade gifts. I'm sure hundreds of thousands of years ago a cave-dwelling child scratched an antelope onto a rock for his mother and she loved it! Lucky for us (and our mothers) we have a greater selection of materials at our disposal to create a gift for Mother's Day that says, "I love you."

Here is a list of a few ideas you can make with your scrapping and stamping supplies for that special mom in your life.

  • composition journals
  • mini albums
  • French memo boards
  • checkbook covers
  • decoupaged/altered boxes
  • stationery/cards
  • recipe books/boxes
  • framed layouts
  • shadow boxes
  • Post-It-Note holders
  • refrigerator magnets
  • brag books
  • napkin rings
  • photo coasters
  • altered clocks
  • altered accessory/jewelry boxes

I decided to create a checkbook cover and matching purse-sized calendar for my mother this year. It was really quite easy, and I love how they turned out!

Materials:

  • plastic checkbook cover
  • small calendar with plastic cover
  • coordinating scrapbook papers
  • Xyron adhesive
  • paper trimmer
  • matte knife
  • bone folder
  • misc. ribbons
  • stickers or rub-ons to coordinate with your theme.

Calendar:

  1. Remove plastic cover from the calendar and measure the length and width of the actual calendar. Trim patterned papers slightly larger than the actual calendar and apply Xyron adhesive.

  2. Carefully stick the patterned paper to the cover of the calendar. Use the side of your bone folder to remove air bubbles or creases by pushing from the center towards the edge with even pressure.

  3. Using a sharp matte knife trim the excess paper from around the edges of your calendar. Embellish as desired with stickers, photos, ribbons, and rub-on words. Replace the plastic cover.

Checkbook Cover:

  1. Using the interior measurements of your checkbook, cut paper to size. Either cardstock or heavy-weight patterned papers work well. Use your bone folder to create the center crease in your paper.

  2. Decorate the front and back cover areas with coordinating papers and embellishments. Add a monogram, small silk flower, or other three-dimensional accent for interest. Avoid delicate accents for this project since it is intended for everyday use and they could be easily ruined.

  3. Slip your finished piece into the plastic cover.
