Dress Up Your Fridge with Homemade Magnets
The seemingly endless supply of paper craft goodies that scrapbookers accumulate can be used to create so many things other than layouts. One of the newest items that I’ve worked with is magnets. I’ve found them to be almost instant gratification. In many cases, I can use items left over from other projects, making it a win-win situation.
Here are several ideas for how to use your scrapbook supplies to create magnets that will make you smile each time you see them on your refrigerator, your school locker, or a magnet board at work.
Altered Puzzle Pieces - Altered puzzle pieces are an embellishment that’s quite popular at the moment. They’re quick and easy to make. Glue a magnet on the back and they make great gifts for almost anyone. They can be decorated specifically for the recipient, based on their hobbies, professions, and likes.
Photos - Use a favorite photo to create your magnet. Quite often I have extra copies of photos left over and it’s a perfect use for those. I think of these as mini layouts. The great thing about them is that I can use ready-made magnetic frames to slide them into and I can change them out whenever I want. A fun idea is to create a collage of your teen’s favorite actor or musician that can be displayed in a locker. Of course, I used one of my all-time favorites (and I’m far from my teenage years) for the second image shown here. It’s hung on one of my metal cabinets at school now to brighten my day.
Favorite Quotes – Print your favorite quote and create a magnet based on it. The image below was created in Photoshop Elements, printed on photo paper and attached to a magnetic business card. I plan to do a whole series of these using images and quotes by my favorite artists.
Layouts - Resize scans of your favorite layouts, print them and apply magnetic backing. This is a perfect way to share your hobby with others.
The ways you can personalize magnets are nearly limitless. You can make magnets purely for your own enjoyment or they make great gifts for your family and friends. The next time you finish a layout, consider using the leftovers for a project that’s magnetic!
