Making Accessories with your Scrapbook Stash

by Michelle Francis (Jul 20, 2010)

Hair Clips and Broaches:

For my daughter’s  tea-party-themed birthday party, I wanted to give each girl a little make-over. For the hair, you need:

  • a container of fabric or plastic flowers (I’ve found the paper ones don’t hold up as well.)
  • alligator clips
  • rhinestones (for the centers)
  • a can of spray hair glitter (because glitter makes every girl shine)
  • hot glue gun

Use the hot glue gun to glue a flower onto the alligator clip. Make sure that the metal on the alligator clip is covered. If the flower doesn’t cover the clip, you can glue on a piece of ribbon over the clip before adding the flower. Then add a rhinestone to the center of the flower with the hot glue. When everything is dry, spray a coat of glitter over the flower for extra shine.

To make a broach, instead of using an alligator clip, use a metal pin back. Some Prima flowers actually come with these in the packaging.

Another option is to use butterflies like those made by Prima.

Pretty Nails:

To add a little extra to your toenails, use some rub-ons. Paint your toenails and wait for them to completely dry.  When they are dry, apply a rub-on design to your toes. I apply them the same way I do to paper; just make sure to cut out the design you want from the rub-on sheet. I have found that some of the rub-ons will actually come off when you press it on with your finger and gently pull back the paper.

When you are done applying, add a couple coats of clear top coat to your nails to make sure you have weeks of enjoyment. If you want to keep the image on for a long time, make sure to put on another coat of clear top coat at least a couple times a week.

You can also add a dot of Stickles to the corner of your nail and you’ve got an instant jewel. Just be sure to let it dry.

Button Jewelry:

What’s better than a beautiful necklace and matching ring? Making them using your supplies. Julie Comstock from Cosmo Cricket made a beautiful necklace using buttons and some ribbon.

Kris Silvester from Bo Bunny used buttons and some wire to make rings.

Stick-On Earrings:

Do you have a lot of bling lying around your scrapbook room? I have a young daughter who loves to wear stick-on earrings and she insists on wearing them everyday. Instead of going out and buying her a new pack of princess stick-on earrings, I decided to pull out some of my self-adhesive gem stones. They worked great! If you don’t have any self-adhesive gem stones, try a glue dot on the back of them. They stick just as well as the earrings at the stores. Truth be told, I’ve worn them to work before.

More Jewelry:

You can use alcohol inks to color metal or glass to make a new bauble for a necklace.

Making Memories also makes a jewelry kit.

I hope this will help you the next time you are looking for just the right accessory for an outfit or need a quick gift. Give some new life to your supplies by turning them into something everyone you meet  will see.
