3D with Diorama Cards

by Jane Swanson (Mar 28, 2008)

A diorama is generally known as a three-dimensional landscaped mini-world, complete with figures and assembled in a container such as a box. A diorama card is similar in that it is three-dimensional and can also be modeled around a theme. The difference is that a diorama card can be put together in such a way that it can fold flat to fit in an envelope.

  1. I wanted my "To You With Love" card to fit in a standard-size business envelope when folded down so I chose these measurements for three different pieces of printed cardstock.
    1. Background: 3.5" x 11"
    2. Middle section: 3.5" x 9"
    3. Cover: 3.5" x 11"
  2. I measured two inches in on the short sides of both the background and the cover and scored.
  3. I measured one inch in on the short sides of the middle section and scored.
  4. On the cover, I cut a window with a one-half-inch border.
  5. On the middle section, I cut a window with an inch border.
  6. I centered the middle section over the background and created a message that would show through the middle window.
  7. I then assembled the three layers using adhesive on the scored edges to form a framed box. I first attached the middle layer to the background. Then I attached the cover to the extended edges of the background.
  8. To coordinate with my theme, I added some punched hearts to the middle window. For mailing, I folded one edge toward the middle. The other edge adjusts to lay flat.

Visit splitcoaststampers.com for additional information about creating diorama cards using punches and to see detailed photos demonstrating how to attach the three layers together.

There are many themes to choose from in creating your own diorama cards. If your stash of patterned cardstock doesn't fit your theme, you can create with stamps and punches to make a card as unique as your recipient. The beauty of your card is that it will stand in all its three-dimensional glory as a tiny model of your sentiment.
