Scrapbook-Themed Parties

by Karen Baxter (Aug 29, 2005)

Turn your next celebration into a memory making event – literally – with the following ideas for scrapbook-themed parties.

Teen and ’Tween Birthdays
Give each guest a 6” x 6” album and supplies to create his or her own “Book of Me.”

Albums can be purchased inexpensively for around $5 at many craft stores or you can create your own accordion-style album, paper bag album, or chipboard album as a cost-efficient alternative.

As for supplies, buy some economy packs of cardstock, glue sticks, magic markers, stencils, glitter pens, decorative scissors and an assortment of stickers. Also, plan to provide a couple of paper trimmers, punches, corner rounders, and any other reusable tools you have on hand and don’t mind sharing.

Hand out a list of suggested page topics including:

-Me (name, birthday, etc.)
-My Family
-My Pets
-My Best Friend
-My Bedroom
-My Favorite Things
-Quotes I Like
-Things That Bug Me
-What I Want to Be
-Things Most People Don’t Know About Me
-My Special Talents

Take a digital photo of each guest and print it out on your photo printer so the guests can use it on the first page of their scrapbooks. Encourage them to leave room for photos on some of the other pages.

Then, just let them get creative!

You may also (or instead) want each guest to make a page for the birthday girl including a photo of herself and her birthday wishes or any special memories she wants to share.

Baby and Wedding Showers
For showers, the idea is for each attendee to create a layout that will be put into one scrapbook, into which the guest of honor can later add photos, memorabilia and journaling. Using a simple title and border format works well for this, since it leaves the majority of the page open.

For these events, you’ll want to create scrapbook keepsakes that last a lifetime, so don’t skimp on the acid-free, higher quality supplies. Buying cardstock and embellishments from one product line is a good way to make sure the pages have a consistent feeling.

Be sure to have cutting tools and adhesives on hand, as well as some sample pages or idea books. You may also need to provide some instructions and directions for non-scrapbookers, if there are any in the group.

Assign each guest a layout theme, to avoid duplication. For the mother-to-be, layout themes could range from the stages of pregnancy, to labor and delivery, visitors in the hospital, coming home, to baby’s first bath, the nursery, milestones, etc. For the bride-to-be, designate pages for the wedding ceremony, reception site, cake, first dance, bridal party, guests, the honeymoon and such.

Also, designate one layout for a group photo of the shower guests and their hand-written words of congratulations or advice for the guest of honor.

Extra Touches

  • To set the theme, create hand-crafted invitations using some of the scrapbook supplies you plan to use at the party.

  • For party favors, give each guest a mini-bag of scrapbooking supplies to use on their own pages.

  • Hold the party in your local scrapbook store, where participants have access to a wider range of tools and products – and you don’t have to do clean-up.

These scrapbook party ideas can also be adapted for younger children, Girl Scout troops, family reunions and other get-togethers.
