Scrapjazz Lingo

by Tiffany Roberts (Oct 22, 2007)

Are you new to the Scrapjazz forums or online chat rooms? Even if you aren't new it can be very confusing trying to figure out what all the abbreviations and scrap-slang terminology are referring to. As the popularity and use of message boards and text messaging have increased, a whole new language has emerged. There's no shame in asking for clarification, but if you're the shy type I might just be able to help! Hopefully this little article will not only clear up a few mysteries, but will help put you in the know about all those funny, commonly used terms and symbols.

Many of the abbreviations used in Scrapjazz forums are the same as, or similar to, those used on other online sites. These universal words are frequently used to denote emotions:

  • LOL: Laugh Out Loud
  • ROFLOL: Rolling On the Floor, Laughing Out Loud
  • PIMP: Pee In My Pants (For those VERY funny moments)
  • OMG: Oh My Goodness!
  • WTG: Way To Go

Symbols are also used to denote emotions. Most people are familiar with the smiley: :) In fact, there are many variations of the "smiley" that people use. Combinations of colons, parentheses, and letters are quite frequent.

  • :P A playful smiley sticking his tongue out at you..
  • :o ) A smiley with a nose
  • ;) A winking smiley (notice use of the semi-colon here)
  • :O An open-mouthed or shocked smiley
  • :( A frowning smiley

There are some symbols that people use that may look odd out of context. Once you know what they mean, however, you'll better understand the tone that the poster was trying to convey.

  • <3 This represents a sideways heart. Used to express love or support.

  • O.O Another way to express shock or surprise, it is meant to look like wide-open eyes.

Other things you might frequently see online are words or abbreviations used to shorten a message. These abbreviations and terms, developed from gamers and the early chat room enthusiasts, have morphed and changed a little bit, but they are very much still in use today.

  • TU: Thank You
  • THX: Thanks
  • YW: You're Welcome
  • FS: For Sale
  • FSOT: For Sale Or Trade
  • IMHO: In My Honest Opinion
  • KWIM: Know What I Mean?
  • OP: Original Post, or Original Poster
  • IDK: I Don't Know
  • WU: What's Up
  • CYA: See You Later
  • GTG: Got To Go
  • BBL: Be Back Later

More terms have been developed to show the relationship between two people. These are often used in the Scrapjazz forums since our scrapbooks are typically about friends and family. Here's the rundown on these abbreviations.

  • BFF: Best Friends Forever
  • DD: Darling Daughter
  • DS: Darling Son
  • DH: Dear Husband (or Darn Husband, depending on the tone of the message)
  • MIL: Mother In Law
  • FIL: Father In Law
  • BF: Boy Friend or Best Friend
  • SIB: Sibling(s)

You may notice the following terms used in the subject line of a message. These are commonly used in an effort to be polite and let people know that the topic of their post is not scrapbooking-related.

  • OT: Off Topic
  • NSBR: Not Scrapbook Related
  • XPOST: Cross Post. (This message is posted in another area of the site as well.)

As our boards are built around the hobby of scrapbooking and the use of these products, there have been several abbreviations developed for the names of our supplies or their manufacturers. These terms are not singular to Scrapjazz, but they are unique among the paper-crafting communities online.

  • PP: Patterned Paper
  • CS: Cardstock
  • WB: Wish Blade
  • DECO: Decorative Scissors
  • BG: Background or BasicGrey
  • DIGI: Digital Camera
  • CB: Chip Board
  • MAMBI: Me and My Big Ideas
  • LSS: Local Scrap Store
  • OSS: Online Scrap Store
  • SU: Stampin' Up
  • CTMH: Close To My Heart

Have I lost you yet? Is this all too confusing? I hope not, and honestly it gets easier the more you read the forums. So don't be shy. Post an introduction about yourself. Give us a little BIO (that's a personal biography about you!) and jump right into the fun! I know it can be intimidating at first, but don't be afraid to ask for clarification. The forums at Scrapjazz.com are stuffed full of wonderful ideas, inspiration, and problem-solving techniques. Before long you and your BFF will be hosting a crop at your LSS and posting about it in the forums for all to read! GL (Good Luck). I know you can do it!
