Terrific Text Boxes
If
you have ever used computer fonts for your layouts, you likely use
Microsoft Word to print fonts onto paper. By using the "Text
Box" feature in Microsoft Word, you can add more style and
variety when using the fonts you already have.
After you learn the logistics
of the text box process, it is time to get creative. With all
the different fonts available commercially and on the web, text
boxes have infinite options for becoming a design focal point on
your layout. Some of my favorites include:
Layer
the text boxes. As shown in the title example, two different
text boxes (or more) can be layered for an interesting 3-D look.
This creates instant texture for a title or text-inspired embellishment.
Consider shadowing the font under "Format" and then "Fonts"
for even more texture.
Create
Drama. Using the "Colors and Lines" option in "Format
Text box", use dramatic fill colors like black. Then change
your text color to white. This gives the appearance of white writing
on a black background. (See layout example.)
Get Fancy. Choose "Format Text box",
and select "Color and Lines". Click on "Fill Color".
At the bottom will be an option called "Fill Effects."
Using this option, you can combine any two colors from the menu,
use a preset rainbow of color combinations, add interesting textures,
and even add in photos for backgrounds. This is more challenging,
but the results are impressive.
Don't be afraid to investigate some of the countless possibilities
that text boxes hold for your next layout. If you make a mistake,
simply go to "Edit" on the toolbar and click "Undo."
Deleting the entire text box is also an option. With minimal effort
you will be designing with text like never before.
