Photoshop Flipping & Straightening

by Denise Gormish (Apr 23, 2009)

Adobe Photoshop allows for many easy adjustments to images. Two very easy adjustments concern the orientation of a photograph - flipping the image and straightening the image.

To flip a photograph's orientation, open the image in Adobe Photoshop. Go to Image - Rotate Canvas. This function will change the entire rotation of the image. 180 degrees will turn it upside down. 90 degrees CW (clockwise ) will turn it to the right. 90 degrees CCW (counter clockwise) will turn it to the left.

To straighten a photograph that is tilted  to the right or left, open the image in Adobe Photoshop. Go to Image - Rotate Canvas. Choose Arbitrary. In the pop-up menu choose a direction and the angle of change. Select OK. If you are straightening an image that is slightly tilted, you won't need to change the angle by much more than 1 or 2 degrees. Experiment until you obtain the desired result.

Another way to straighten a photograph is to open a blank document that is larger than your image and edit your image in that document. For example, open a 12" x 12" document and drag (or cut and paste) your image into the document. To rotate the image, select Edit - Transform - Rotate. Holding your mouse button down, rotate the image around until you straighten it. Press the Enter key to confirm the change.

Remember these two easy functions the next time your image isn't oriented correctly.
