Digitally Journaling on a Photograph
I love to write. I love the stories, the details and the reflection created by journaling, so my scrapbook pages tend to have journaling on every page. Sometimes, though, I am low on space for journaling or I want to do something creative with journaling. In those instances, I will add my journaling directly on the photograph. Using digital photo editing software such as Adobe Photoshop, journaling can be added to the photograph and then printed. Here are a few ideas: - Add text to an uncluttered area of a photograph. Text can be added to a portion of the photograph where the text will be clearly viewed. A light background with black text or a dark background with white text works well.
Open a photograph. Select the Text tool and insert the cursor. With the lines justified to the left, type your text. Use the return to move to the next line. Continue to type until satisfied. Flatten layers and save. - Add text by creating a white layer on a photograph. If the background is cluttered, cover it up with a white layer before typing your text. This will allow the text to be read clearly.
Open a photograph. Set the foreground color to white. Select the Gradient Tool. Click on the photograph, inserting the cursor at the starting edge of the area you want white, and then drag it to the ending edge of the area. Repeat until you get the level of white which you desire. Add your text with the Text tool. Type until satisfied. Flatten layers and save. In my photograph, I inserted the gradient tool at the top of the photograph and dragged it down toward the desk. I repeated the process until the area for the text was completely white, then I added my text. - Add text all around the edges of a photograph. Text can be applied to the edge of the photograph including encircling the photograph. With an uncluttered photograph, the text can simply be added by using four layers of text - one for each side.
Open a photograph. Select the Text tool and insert the cursor. With the lines justified to the left, type your text until you reach the end of the photograph. Create a new text layer and repeat on all four sides. To produce the vertical journaling, rotate the text with a rotation feature such as Adobe Photoshop's "Edit-Tranform." Arrange the layers and edit text to your satisfaction. Flatten layers and save. If your border is cluttered create a border around the photograph first, and then add the text. In my sample I created a plain black border before inserting the text. - Unite two or more photographs with a layer of journaling. Journaling can also be inserted between two or more photographs.
Open the photographs. Size them and arrange them on a new document. Make your foreground color the color you want for your journaling background. Sweep out an area to insert the journaling using the Rectangle tool. Using a new layer type in the journaling with the Text tool. Arrange and edit. Flatten layers and save. In my "Relax in Minnesota" photographs, I swept out an area between the top and bottom photographs and then added the text. Before printing your photographs, consider the advantages and techniques of adding journaling directly to the photograph.
