Conserving Ink and Saving Money
Whether I'm printing photos, titles, or journaling, it seems I need my printer for almost every page-which means I'm constantly replacing ink cartridges. I've learned a few tricks to help preserve printer ink to stretch each ink cartridge a little bit farther.
- Draft Mode. Often I need to print a draft of a title or journaling in order to make sure that it will fit correctly on my page. To print a draft, I choose "draft" or "economy" mode in the printer settings. This helps preserve ink and also is much faster than printing in normal mode. When I print the final copy, I change the mode back to "normal" or "best" for a better quality print.
- Remove the Color. Print in grayscale, rather than full color. Since black ink cartridges are typically much less expensive than color cartridges, it's a good way to conserve that pricey color ink. This works well when printing web pages, articles, and e-mails.
- Shades of Gray. When I'm printing a title to cut out of cardstock, I will print the mirror image of the text in a light shade of gray rather than black. I can still see the outline in order to trim around each letter, but it doesn't saturate the paper with unnecessary ink.
- Don't Print. Yes, it's obvious that if you don't print as often, your ink will last longer. However, you can easily cut down on the amount of ink you use when printing information from the web. Instead of printing entire pages of information directly from a web site, copy and paste the information you really need to print, saving your printer from working overtime on printing images and extra text that you don't need.
- Save a Page. While you're in conservation mode, don't forget to save on paper. Print drafts of titles and journaling on the backside of already printed paper, rather than using a fresh sheet. You can use one piece up to 4 times depending on the way it is loaded into the printer and how much text you are printing. For titles and small journaling blocks, it's easy to use one piece of paper for all of your trial prints.
- Buy Remanufactured Ink Cartridges. Companies like 123Inkjets sell ink cartridges at a reduced rate (often up to 50%) because they are refilled rather than brand new. Only your pocket book will know the difference.
All this conservation will help you save a little bit of money on ink cartridges, allowing you to spend a little more on the new scrapbook supplies at your local store!
