Digital Step-by-Step: One More Time

by Denise Gormish (Aug 5, 2008)

One thing I enjoy about digital scrapbook pages is the ability to easily create a graphic look. One technique for a graphic look is to create a box around a section of your layout. In my layout, I created a box around the photograph and the journaling while including a second, offset photograph. I will take you through the steps of making the box and adding a title and journaling.

Supplies:

  • Adobe Photoshop Elements or CS
  • digital photographs

Optional embellishments:

  • 2" x 12" Distressed Edge Overlay - Anna Aspnes, DesignerDigitals
  • Double Dates Stamp (painted) - Katie Pertiet, DesignerDigitals
  • stitched ribbon - Tia Bennett, twopeasinabucket

Instructions:

  1. New Document. Open a new 12" x 12" Photoshop document.

  2. Create a White Background. First create a new layer by going to Layer - New - Layer and name your layer "white background." click OK. Next, Go to Layer - New Fill Layer - Solid Color. Select white color and click OK to choose the color. Click OK to accept changes. Optional: If you own digital paper, you may insert it instead of creating a white background.

  3. Add Photographs. Open your photographs, resize, then copy and paste them into the 12" x 12" document. Arrange with one near the top of the left side, leaving a 1 1/4 inch border. Arrange another smaller photograph 1 1/4 inches from the bottom toward the middle.

  4. Add Box. Create a new layer (same as in step 2). Next, select the rectangular marquee tool. Starting one inch from the top of the layout and one inch from the left side of the layout, draw a box that extends around the top picture and down over the bottom picture. Keep your box one inch from the bottom as well.

Go to Edit - Stroke. Choose a pixel width. The higher the pixel number the thicker the border will appear. Double click on the color to choose a color. I chose 4 px and black color. Click OK to choose the color. Click OK to accept changes.

  5. Remove Border over the photograph. To remove part of the border, select it with the rectangular marquee tool and select cut to remove it.

  6. Add Title. Select horizontal type tool. Insert it into the space for the title. Using a font menu, choose font size, style and color. I chose CK Love Note font at 60 pt in blue/green. Use the move tool to position it.

  7. Add Text. Select horizontal type tool. Create a text box by dragging the tool into a box where you want your journaling to be inserted.

Chose your font size, style and color. I choose CK Cosmopolitan at 14 pt in black. Add text by either typing it or cutting and pasting the text from another source.

  8. Add Embellishments if desired. The design can be printed out and finished at this point. It could also have traditional paper or digital embellishments added. To complete my page, I added a digital date stamp, a digital ribbon and digital paint on the edges.

Now, you can create an easy, graphic look.
