Description:This is a photo of me when I was about 7 years old with my pony Rocket on a farm in Roanoke, Illinois. Kind of a sad story at the end.
Sorry the bottom of this layout got cut off a bit on the scan.
Between 1967 and 1968, when I was 7 & 8 years old, we lived on a farm in Roanoke, Illinois. We rented the house, and the people who owned it farmed the land. We had a Shetland pony named Rocket. Rocket stayed in a large pasture and a small barn located inside the fenced-in pasture. Shetland ponies are ornery by nature, and Rocket was no exception. We were only allowed to ride him with strict adult surpervision, because he would often try to swipe the rider off of his back on a fence or under a tree. Every once in a while, he would figure out how to break out of the fence, and Mom would have to chase him round and round in her station wagon on the roads surrounding the farms until he tired and returned home. Still, it was pretty fun having my very own pony. When we moved to Springfield, Missouri in 1969, we brought Rocket with us. We found someone who had a farm in Waynesville, Missouri who boarded him for us. Unfortunately, not long after we moved, Rocket was standing under a tree, and was struck and killed by lightening. A sad ending to the life of my pony.
