Description: The story of how we told our family that we are having a baby. I did all the journaling the week that we told them, and then just used it right on the page.
{written on Monday, November 21, 2005}
November 19th, the Saturday before Thanksgiving, we drove 10 ½ hours to Murphysboro to see my mom. We left at 8 in the morning and were pretty anxious to get going. We decided to meet mom for dinner in Carbondale at Applebees, so we didn’t tell her then. We wanted to wait until we got home. Plus, we had stopped to buy her the Sex in the City DVD collection at Sam’s on the way and I wanted to give her that, and then give her the card I made that told her we were pregnant. The DVDs were sort of an exciting distraction.
After dinner, we went home and then we had a little campfire in the backyard and Scott came to sit with us. So we didn’t tell her then either. We wanted to wait until Scott left, because we didn’t want Scott to know before Ben’s family. So finally at about 10pm he went home and we went inside—I could finally tell her.
I told her that I brought her something and went to the other room to get it. When I pulled out the Sex in the City DVD set she was shocked! I told her it was an early Hannukah present. I knew she wanted it (she’d been hinting at it for weeks). I let her ooh and ahh over it for a few minutes and look through the set. Finally, when I thought the initial excitement was wearing off a little bit, I gave her the card. She looked at it and read the front of it and her eyes sort of lit up and she looked at me. Then she turned the pages and I could tell she knew what it was going to say. When she got to the inside page she jumped up and squealed and hugged my neck like crazy. The card said “Guess What?....Take 3 Guesses….No, we didn’t win the lottery…No, we didn’t buy a car…..no we didn’t get new jobs….We’re having a baby!”
She was pretty excited, then shocked. I think it’s still sinking in a few days later. She asked me how I’d been feeling and then wanted to know when the baby was due. Other than that, she didn’t ask many questions. Although, she did already start planning her summer around it and start talking about who she wanted to tell. We told her she had to wait to tell anyone until after Thanksgiving, with the exception of Grandma and Grandpa and anyone at Thanksgiving in Chicago.
The next morning, she and I walked to Farm Fresh for milk and she said, “You know what the first thing I thought of this morning was? Andrea’s pregnant!” I told her it’s the first thing I remember too, but it’s because I have to go to the bathroom!
Sunday afternoon I called Jake to tell him. I called his cell phone and since he said he was at home and all the rest of the kids were there too, I decided to tell them all at once. So Jake had them all come into the same room and put me on speaker phone. Once I knew they were all there, I said, “Jake, I have a really good birthday present for you this year…You’re going to be an uncle. Ben and I are having a baby.” They all started screaming and I heard Kelly say that she was going to cry. It was pretty funny to listen to all of them at once. I think they were all really excited. Jake yelled “I’m going to be a godfather and an uncle!” I didn’t know what that meant until later. A friend of his is having a baby and they asked him to be the godfather.
I tried calling Daddy right after that, but he was at the firehouse and didn’t answer his phone, so I left him a message to call me back. I did go ahead and call Jan though, since she would see all of the kids later that day, and I wanted to tell her myself. She was really excited for us and asked me how I was feeling, if we thought we’d find out if it was a boy or girl, and that sort of stuff. She said she didn’t know about any of her kids and thought it was pretty exciting to wait. A few hours later, Daddy called back, so I got to tell him. He was excited too. He asked “Are you ready for that”. I said, “Well, I guess we better be!” He really did sound excited for us, so I was glad. He also said they may come visit on New Years…which I’m hoping means he’s getting us all tickets to the Bears/Vikings football game in Minneapolis that day! We’ll see!

On Monday after we told all of my family about the baby we went to Nashville for the night. We stayed in a hotel and just enjoyed a night to ourselves before heading to Birmingham the next day. We went to dinner at a Longhorn Steakhouse and I had some fantastic chicken fingers. Apparently my “food of choice” for pregnancy is chicken fingers, because they tasted great and they didn’t make my stomach get upset. So I’ve been eating a lot of chicken lately.
We stayed with Josh and Rachel in Birmingham on Tuesday night and on Wednesday spent the day driving around with Josh and got to see his school, Zach’s office, and Rachel’s office. That evening we all caravanned down to Auburn to Tom and Linda’s house.
We got to their house at about 7:00. Zach and Janel and the boys got there about 30 minutes after us, so we ate dinner around 8:00. Ben and I were waiting for everyone to be in the room at the same time to make our announcement, but Zach was upstairs playing with Tucker, then he was in the bathroom, and FINALLY he came into the kitchen with everyone else. It seemed like we waited forever for him!
When he was finally there, Ben said “Hey Mom, have you gotten a tattoo yet?” She shook her head and laughed as if to say “Are we talking about this again?” Ben said, “Well, Andrea got one.” Janel said “Good for You” and a couple of other people said “Really? When did you get it? Etc.” Before I answered anyone Ben said “Just show them.” So I stood up and said “Are you ready?” Everyone was watching, so I lifted up my shirt to show my stomach and I had a “Baby on Board” sticker on it. It was quiet for a split second and then everyone started screaming and shouting and laughing. Janel ran over to me from the other side of the table and hugged me. Tom nearly choked on his drink and Linda looked speechless. Everyone was really excited and completely shocked. It was a great way to tell them.
