Description: Whenever I think of my childhood in New Jersey, there are favorite memories that always repeat themselves, perhaps because they were the happiest of many. One standout is playing in the old chicken coop that was attached to one side of the huge pole barn my dad used as the garage-workshop-storage area. It wasn’t huge, but it felt that way when I climbed up onto the roof. I’m really not sure what the attraction was, but I loved sitting up there and watching what was going on all around me. I could see into all the neighboring
back yards: the clean laundry on the lines, the flower and vegetable
gardens, the burn barrels waiting to be fired up. Interestingly, I don’t
remember a single chicken. I DO, however, remember the mean rooster
that flew at me claws first and tore my jacket. Dad went after
him with the axe and he was our dinner soon after!
