Description: No matter what zoo we visit, I gravitate toward the big cats and the apes. And each and every time, without exception,I have had an “up close and personal” experience with one of them. In these blurry pictures is one of the gorillas at the Salt Lake City, Utah zoo. The front enclosure wall was all glass so visitors could walk right up next to it, which I promptly did. This one gorilla was busy picking up food when he noticed me sitting on the floor up against the window. He found a piece of cardboard, picked it up and came over to the window where I was sitting. At first, he sat with his back to me but kept looking out of the corner of his eye to make sure I was there. Eventually, he turned toward me and showed me his treasure. We sat there for a very long time, looking eye to eye and just sharing a moment. It was so touching to me. It always is. I don’t know why animals gravitate to me, but they do. And it breaks my heart to see them caged. While I understand the joy these animals bring to people who might otherwise never see them live, it still makes me incredibly sad.
