The 3 features I like about this layout is the kinte (spelling) cloth look of the page, the tryptic photographs, and the linking of it to Christmas with the Santa hat and intensity of opening a gift only a child can have. I like clean lines to pages--a minimalist to the core--minimalism can be complex as shown here.
