Description:The leaves, lettering and rail fence are all cut by hand. The fence and letters were chalked with greys and browns and then detailed with a brown pen. The velllum and leaves are inked on the edges.
Journaling reads: The friendship between the Kimbrel's and the Cabe's is like an old rail fence. Still there ever after all these years, even though we have lived 13 hours apart for more than ten years. The most amazing thing is that the kids, especially the Sarahs and the Bens, have kept in touch with each other all these years. They talk to each other online and sometimes on the phone and they have a great time when we do manage to get together. This photo was taken on our visit to Michigan in October 2003. The kids are standing by age from oldest to youngest: Hannah C, Joshua K, Rachel C, Adam K, Sarah C, Sarah K, Benjamin K, Ben C, Stephen C. TFL
The poem is An Old Rail Fence by Agnes Davenport Bond and reads:
Winding about on the side of a hill, An old rail fence is standing there still.
The cross-barred rails, now darkened with age, appear like a scene on an old tattered page.
The days of one's childhood are brought back to mind, when fences like this were all one would find.
Picturesque yet, on the side of the hill, a memory picture is standing there still.
But time makes its changes as years pass away; and what we are seeing before us today
perhaps may seem old in the years that are hence, as old and untimely as this weathered fence.
