This year your birthday didn’t turn out as you hoped yet as usual you accepted things and handled it with grace. You make us so proud Jade. You were supposed to have a sleepover birthday party. You changed the date a few times to try and accommodate all your friends however in the end you decided the best thing to do was to cancel it. It was so unfortunate that a couple of your friends had to work and Vanessa, your best friend, had a weekend family event to attend. After you decided to cancel the sleepover, you sat with me in the bedroom and had a little cry, got things out of your system and then just accepted that things don’t always work out the way you want them to.
On Friday 15 October, Stef, Amy and you went to Adventure World for the day to celebrate your birthday. Dad dropped you off and the three of you had a blast on all the rides and waterslides. You really enjoyed yourself.
On Saturday evening, the day before your birthday we went to Nan’s house. I even managed to overcome my agoraphobia that night and went along too. Helen made dinner for the five of us. We had Kofta Curry, Bhagi, Yellow Rice and Papadums. It was a delicious meal which we all enjoyed. You said you wanted a plain cake this year so your birthday cake was an apple and cream sponge cake which we all devoured after you had blown out the candles and cut it up.
You asked your dad and me not to give you anything for your birthday. Instead you wanted us to keep the money and add it to some money for Christmas because you wanted to buy a mini iPod. Nanny Joan gave you $100, Helen gave you $50.00, Michael and Joanne gave you $30, Da and Nanny Marge gave you $30 and you got $30 from Dick and Annette. You were so excited with all the money you received. Your friend Cathy gave you a beautiful silver cross necklace and a pair of cross earrings along with a candle and some temporary blue hair dye. Vanessa gave you an “Emily the Strange” wallet and an Eve.L poster (she’s one of your favourite cartoon characters.) You had been wanting one of those wallets for some time and you were absolutely thrilled with it.
Unfortunately, a couple of weeks after your birthday you and a group of your friends went out for the day. You took a bus and you dropped your wallet which contained all your money along with some new earrings you had bought that day. There was a large group of guys on the bus. You said they ranged in age from around 15 to 40. They got hold of your wallet and you never got it back. You told us that the wallet itself was more important to you than the money inside because not only had your best friend given it to you, but you knew she had paid a lot of money for it. You really wanted it back however, you finally let it go. Your dad and I are so glad that you decided to do that Jade. No money or possessions are worth fighting for. We would have been devastated if anything had happened to you. We have told you this so many times and are so thankful that you listened to us. You learnt a lesson that day my love. Never carry all your money with you and if you are in a dangerous position…walk away. I know it was hard for you to do that, but when it came down to it you showed us that you were able to walk away. I thank God for that. Hopefully, next year things will work out and you will be able to have a party.
