With everything bloomimg,as springtime is in fullgear, the Dogwood tree has very special meaning to me. I cannot look at a blossom without thinking about the 4 petals, representing the cross on which Jesus died, and the red tips reminding me of the blood he shed for you and me.
Both photos were taken of my tree in my backyard. I used vellum over the one to tie the legend in.

As legend has it,the cross on which Jesus was crucified was made from a dogwood tree. God decreed that the dogwood tree would from that day forth never grow large enough to be used to make a cross. Thus the dogwood tree is a small, understory tree. The flower of the dogwood has four petals which makes the shape of a cross. The center of the flower resembles the crown of thorns with bright red, clustered fruit in the center representing the blood of Christ. The dogwood blooms in April when Easter Sunday marks the resurrection of Christ after the Crucifixion.
Even as a child, I always looked at a Dogwood blossom as a sign of Easter. My Mother told me the legend of the Dogwood and I have shared this beautiful story with my own children.Every place I have ever lived, I have planted a Dogwood tree.To me, it symbolizes my growing faith in Jesus Christ. The years when Easter comes later on the calendar, and the Dogwood has lost its blooms, it almost feels sacrilegious to me...it's just not the same. But next week is Easter, and guess what...my Dogwoods are in full bloom.
