My mom has played bridge every second Thursday with the same women for over 20 years now. As kids, we considered it to be a bitter sweet event - we knew our mom was sharing embarrassing details about us as the other women did about their kids, but we looked forward to the fact that there would be good food and as a result of the boxes of wine, new Barbie waterbeds for our dolls. (We'd blow up the silver liner inside - it worked perfectly!)
Before the marriage of each girl, the bridge ladies arrange a lunch bridal shower at Victoria Golf Club. If the child is a boy, the future wife gets taken instead.
Today was my shower and I had a wonderful time. We had a private room at the golf club and besides a nice lunch, there was a gorgeous cake and a present of our full set of silverware.
Looking around at these women today, I realized how much they have shared in their years together - births, marriages, divorce, annual trips to Seattle and the trials and tribulations of raising children. Through out all this, they still make time to play bridge every second Thursday. It's not so much about the cards as it is the friendship.
I hope life deals me a similar hand.

WOW~Your journaling is very touching! What an awesome group of ladies to stick to there ritual through good times and bad! I also think it is an outstanding gesture to include each child/spouse in a special day set aside to celebrate the marriage of their children. I would love to have been a mouse in that room~being a mom of 4~ I could have learned a lot by listening to their conversations!
