Description:This is from my mom's memorial service. She received full military honors. She was a WAC during WWII and very active in Verteran affairs until her death in April of this year. The photograph of the flag at half staff is the honor paid to all veterans when they have a memorial at the Veterans Cemetery. The small tag has some of the lines from Taps.
Thank you to all of you who have posted comments. This has been very therapeutic for me and I hope that by posting these it will allow others to follow with their own such lo's.
"On behalf of a grateful nation," the Major said as she presented me with my mother's burial flag. It was a moment I had known would come, a moment when I could briefly share in the honor that my mother felt in serving her nation in WWII, a moment to acknowledge her dedication to veterans and their affairs throughout her life. I knew my mother would have appreciated the fact that the honor guard had selected a woman to present the flag. The burial flag presentation, a gun salute, and taps closed the book on my mother's life, but her legacy will live on in the Veterans Cemetery she helped establish and where she is further honored with a standing headstone now reserved for fallen active duty soldiers. It will live on in the halls of the nursing home unit that she helped to bring about and in which she died at the VA Medical Center in Asheville NC. Her spirit will live on in her family for whom she set an outstanding example.
