I had a similar choice a couple of years ago. I opted for the film SLR and still bought a digital for snapshots. I use my SLR for special events or if I know I'm going to be faced with tricky light situations, fast action shots, etc.
I use my digital camera a lot for everyday snapshots and the like. I carry it with me a lot just in case there's a shot that I want to get.
I just could not see paying the price they wanted for the rebel when I was able to get a film and digtal camera for less.
Why do you feel you should have to go with the digital if you think the film camera will satisfy your needs. If later you opt to go completely digital then you can probably use that zoom lenses with the Digital Rebel since the Digital EOS Rebel can use most of the film lenses also.
So unless the cost of developing pictures is really too pricey for you, you can get the film Rebel and have money left over. (With that you can get a very good compact digital that you can slip in your pocket or purse and carry with you all the time if you like)
But if you want to make that leap to digital only, then go for it.
I guess what I'm saying is (I'm sure most here will disagree) I think that film camera is a good value.

I thought about this overnight and I'm now leaning toward the purchase of the Digital Rebel. The initial investment may seem high but photography is rapidly heading for digital. The investment in a Digital Rebel is more in keeping with newer technology and the film purchase may just be an exercise in planned obsolescence.
I'm not where I was two years ago and now, given the choice I would opt for the digital Rebel.

Miranda, Thanks so much for taking the time to answer my question. I slept on my decision many nights....finally came to the conclusion that I would go digital. The camera just arrived...it's a Christmas present to myself! Now I just need to sit down and learn to use it. I'm excited about it, too! Thanks!!!!

Good choice! You'll be amazed at what you save in developing costs. I know I must save at least a couple hundred each year.
I am very picky about my developing, but found that our local Sam's club does a fantastic job. I can alter and send the pics online and pick them up in an hour. Best of all, I only order the prints that I will use. That is almost always under $2! (Including an occasional large print for special sb pages) I used to pay $12 per roll at a nice developing center.

There are a bunch of new options in the market now and I am as confused as always. I have a Kodak Easy Share 6 MP 12x opt. zoom and I HATE it!!!! (I have so much problems with the flash) I told DH that I wanted a new one, but since he picked the Kodak one, now is leaving the option to me and I have no clue! :shrug:

I know it can be confusing.. WEll i was looking into A Rebel, but it was just out of my budget, so i got the NIkon D40 .. i love it, i originaly wante dthe D40 x, but my husband purchassed the camera as a gift for me, and he didin't know they were different.. all the same I LOVE MY CAMERA!!... affordable, and very high quality... Actaulyl several ladies at my LSS were looking into new camera's and they have a much bigger budget than i and after cheking out my camera 2 of them purchased it that week... the only problem with the SLR is that it is not small enough to pack in a bag.. I am in the market for a small camera as well. i too hate my Kodak Easy share camera, i do love the printer though.. and the editing program is lacking to say the very least.. for a small camera... I have no clue.. but if anyone has a suggestion i would love to get one soon

My wife and I just bought a DSLR to replace a point and shoot. We love it. No longer are our pictures of our son leaving the frame. I'd definitely get a DSLR over a point and shoot style camera.

Consumer Reports just put put a new 2007 camera review just in time for the holidays. There are some great new cameras out there, worth checking the new report.
Does anyone have a Sony T100 or T200, a Canon A710 IS or A720 IS or Panazonic Fx30? These were rated well and I wanted first hand user's experience. thanks!
