DH & I are talking about replacing the carpeting in our house, and we are trying to decide between hardwood or tile. Do we do all the rooms in the house or just the main rooms (kitchen, living/family room & DH office)?

Suggestions please.

If I had my way, I'd have every room in hardwood. Right now the entire main level is hardwood and the upstairs is carpeted except the bathrooms. The basement is entirely large tile

We have hard wood everywhere except our entry ways and bathrooms. The basement is carpet. I like having carpet in the basement. I just wish I would have gone with a berber carpet instead of the short shag. I might get an estimate to see how much it would be to change it.

How much work do you have to put into your hardwood floors, keeping them clean & nice looking?

Mine is a single plank wood laminate flooring. It's a lot easier to care for. I just sweep/swiffer mine. If you have dogs inside I would definitely go with wood laminate.

We have tile in our kitchen, family room and hall. I hate it. I absolutely hate it! Wish I had never done it.

We looked at floor samples, DH definitely wants hardwood, not tile. Going to have to do a lot of research before deciding on which type of hardwood we will go with.

Why do you hate it?

Debbie,

2 years ago, we took out all of our carpeting and put hardwood in the entire house. The only places with tile are the bathrooms and utility room.

We love them. I just vacuum or sweep and mop with Bona or vinegar and water, when I think it needs it. That means it can be once a week or every other day. It doesn't take that long.

Thanks everyone. Looks like it will be hardwood floors. Still need to research & decide on a style/color.

I also suggested to DH that we may want to re-roof the house first. Our roof is the original when we bought the house new 22 years ago. We are noticing that shingles are starting to fall off the house when the wind blows, which could lead to water damage if we have a wet winter.

I have both and love both. Tile is almost indestructible!

It's cold - The grout lines catch every little thing - It's unforgiving when you drop something - It's slick as can be when it's wet.

My husband has problems with his balance so the slick thing is the worst for me.

I think the slickness depends on the finish on the tile bc ours isn't slick at all. And with 2 kids, it gets wet.

Ah, makes sense! I live where it's hot and dry, so cool tile to walk on is a good thing, LOL! I didn't think about it being cold. Ours isn't slippy when it's wet but I've experienced some that is, could be a hazard for sure.

Since we've been married, we had carpet in every room, including the kitchen. Then 14 years ago (gosh, just doesn't seem like that long!) we built this house and put wood floor in the kitchen/dining room, tile in all the bathrooms and front entryway. Now I regret all that! As I've gotten older, I can't walk barefoot on the wood and tile floors because it hurts my feet! And yes, it's cold to walk on barefoot, no matter what time of year it is!

Other than that, I have no complaints. It looks nice, and have had no problems.....
