My mother and brother are driving me up the wall.

Long story short, my brother (who lives with Mum) got us an electronic window cleaner for Christmas. DH uses it to clean the shower. It's gone wrong and none of us can find the receipt. The company said that as its still within warranty, they'll accept a copy of the credit card statement as proof of purchase, and replace it.

My mother, in her paranoia of identity theft, fraud, hacking etc. has persuaded my brother that it's not safe to send his details.

I would have thought that a reputable company would be safe with the details of a statement. They only want proof of purchase, after all. They're not interested in anything else. Right? Or is my Mum correct to worry?

Black out the private information. She can actually call the company back and tell them her concern and ask what they need to see and black out the rest. They should only need her name, address, date, and product purchase information.

She is correct to be concerned, but she can take steps to protect herself as well.
The company may be reputable, but that doesn't mean all of the employees who would come into contact with her information are as well.
So, by blacking out the CC number especially, she protects herself.

There was no point in getting either my mother or brother to make that call so I did. They said they only need to see the credit company's headed paper showing the company and its address etc, and the one transaction. No other information is required at all. But they do have to see it, not just have it transcribed in an e-mail.

It would have been nice if they had said that in the first place instead of requesting the whole statement down to the transaction in question.

The next battle will be to get my brother to do this simple thing.

Thanks all!
