I am going through a dozen old photo albums and pulling pictures of my kids with their dad (to give them for Christmas)

It is bittersweet. . . . .

Oh Steph, I'm sorry. I feel the same way when I see pics of my boys when they were young. Because even though I love them for who they are today; there are times when I wish I could go back; just for a day.

Jeremiah is really struggling with his dads condition since his stroke & the realization that he may never get "better"

It's a real mourning process and so hard for me to watch.

How is he now? I haven't seen any updates since things were quite grim. Is he home?

I have been wanting to ask you Stephanie - how is your ex doing? Has he been moved closer to home? I am sorry to hear that Miah is struggling

He was in KC for nearly 4 weeks, then life-flighted to a hospital up here. Once the feeding tube and vent were removed (a few more weeks) he was moved to a nearby rehab facility (aka: nursing home)

His left side is still immobile. More disheartening than the physical limitations though, are the mental... He's very confused, oftentimes not making sense / believing things to be true that are not. At times he seems to be stuck in the past, reliving vacations we took 20+ years ago, talks about me, and people we hung out with back then. At times he'll say he just bought a boat yesterday (and believes that to be true?) and then you have to correct him

Our first snowfall, he had his gf call Jeremiah for him - and he told 'Miah to come get him so they could put the plow on the truck and go move snow. Brittany said he often calls himself a brain dead, crippled white boy :'(

I guess at times he does make sense, but it really fades in and out. They say he talks non-stop (definitely not his old character) and deeply craves cigarettes and whiskey; saying he can't wait to get out of there so he can have them again.

{sigh}

I'm sorry. It's hard watching a loved one deteriorate.

Try not to let it get you down too badly - consider it a chance to remind yourself why you all still care!

I'm sorry Stephanie, especially for Britt and 'Miah.

One silver lining - he's obviously not allowed to smoke or drink in there, so he's off the sauce. That's got to be helping his brain recover quicker than it would otherwise.

True.

I had to ask Britt when his stroke occurred, as I've lost track of time. It was September 21, so he is just at the 3/month mark. I soooo hope he gets the intensive rehabilitation that could make a difference in improving his quality of life.

Has he gotten any fresh air at all? been in the sun, even if it's cold outside? victims of stroke really need vitamin d and sun exposure helps with that. I know that rehab facilities are terrible at that and the patients are often left waiting for their daily therapies without any additional palliative care. They seem to focus so much of future cognitive and physical abilities that they forget immediate needs to ensure them. I found treatment of stroke victims to be intuitive not at all and was very discouraged watching papa go through it. Personality changes are very common unfortunately. It's hard, I'm sorry. Recovery is a very slow process regardless of how big or small. Very sad to watch, I'm so sorry Steph.

I do hope that with continued therapy he can continue to improve - how hard for everyone. Thank you for the update.

It breaks my heart (mostly for my kids)

There has been a lot of distention between his gf and his family (mom & sisters) which has left Brittany to mediate....

$ issues, insurance issues, farm issues (what to do with it?) etc....

Jeremiah has felt guilt for not jumping in to take over the farm - when he knows all his dad wanted - was for him to graduate college (he'll be the first in our family) and would be so proud!
