Other then not setting food out on the counter? or putting produce 'garbage' in the trash?

They are so annoying!! We always have a fruit bowl and bananas on our counter.

You could try putting a mixture of apple cider vinegar and dish soap/detergent in a bowl on the counter. The vinegar attracts the fruit flies and the dish soap weighs them down so they can't fly back out.

we tried the vinegar trick last week (didn't have cider vinegar as suggested though) and didn't add the dish soap. It did catch & kill a dozen or so of them, but others are still annoying me!

A tomato gone bad is what started it but that was a couple of weeks ago. Counters are clean. Trash has a lid & goes out often. Will try vinegar & dish soap this weekend.

^^ Do they die inside or fly out? If they die, what a great idea! Mine would probably fly back out tho. I saw to make a funnel down to the vinegar/soap mixture. Didn't work so great. I usually put something icky like tomato rinds in a Walmart bag and leave it overnite. The I "catch" them the next morning and hurry and take it out.

The apple vinegar and dish soap should work well, and I have read some years ago that you should boil water and pour it in the sink while it is still boiling, to kill their eggs in the pipe. That worked really well for us.

Really? I never heard that before. I'll try that, although we only get the odd one around. My counter-top kitchen waste bin has a good seal, and I don't keep anything other than bananas out. Eggs in the pipe? Eurgh.

If the fruit/food that attracts them is gone, pour a little bleach down your sink drain.

I'll try to the bleach in the drains today. We've still got em and have not had fruit / tomatoes in the house for weeks.
