How exactly does it work? After you sign up, do you do searches for what you want? Or does it just give you a bunch of stuff to look at or what? And what does pinning mean? I used to go there when you could just browse, and a variety of things would come up. Someone here gave a link where I could do searches w/o signing up.

You can search without signing up but you can't pin. Which means to save that link to one of your folder on the site so you can reference back to it later. It also shows up on the main page and for those who follow you. I like it and use it a lot for different things. I search for what I'm looking for and most often find it fast.

Pinning also means that if you find something on-line, like a recipe or a card, that you want to keep for future reference, you can pin the picture to your board and it will include a link to the original article. Much like your Favourites here in the Gallery, but web-wide. Then your followers will see what you've pinned and can pin it to their own boards if they want to.

You can also have up to 3 private boards that only you can see, for example if you're planning a gift for someone who is also on Pinterest.

As Vivi said, if you don't have an account, you can still search but you can't save to your own boards.

What if you don't want anyone following you? I was thinking I could only 'search' after someone here sent me a link to it. It wanted me sign up when I tried just going there to search some stuff.

I haven't got any private boards so I haven't played with that. But if you have to have at least one public board then just make it an anonymous account and put one random thing on one board and only use the private ones.

Why don't you want anyone following you though? It makes no difference as far as I can see, and the whole point of Pinterest is to share ideas. If everyone had only private boards, there wouldn't be anything for anyone to see.

I love Pinterest. My grand-daughters search it now too. That's where they come up with ideas for Gramma days. If I want to save something and don't want them to see it on my board I do a Right Click, Copy and then save to Word. That way I have it but they don't know about it.

you can create a private board that only you can see. Unless of course they are signed in under your name then it wouldn't work

I don't know about private boards.

But, what I have found out is that after awhile some links go away. So, if I've saved something to my board and go back later, the directions or recipe may not be there. That's when I started to do the right click, save to Word and save on my computer routine

they have an option where you can make a board secret and only you can see it. It has to be a new board you can't make one you already have a secret. I pin things I want to get my girls, reminds me and doesn't ruin the surprise for them.
