Anyone eat the pre-cut carrots? I was thinking I heard somewhere they're not good for you.

I usually buy the baby carrots and shred them myself. I've also bought the julienne cut carrots, but I end up chopping them up because they are so darn long.

Have not heard anything about cut carrots being bad for you....

Why are they not good for you?

Raw carrots are not metabolised as well as cooked ones, but is that what you mean?

No. I haven't googled it yet. I heard the white color they get after a while, is formaldehyde coming out. Who knows what to believe!

I have heard that too - also heard it is chlorine. - we used to buy them for convenience but I don't actually like the taste of them so now we buy regular carrots. Also we don't often eat them just raw unless they are in a salad and the tiny ones are a pain to cut.

I buy them for my roasts. Other than that we, unfortunately, are not big veggie eaters.

I looked this up recently and read that because carrots are root vegetables the white color is from them 'drying out.' The root no longer has a water source. If you soak the carrots in water their orange color will return. If they have been white for a long period of time though they will lose flavor and nutrients because they were deprived of water to long.

I buy organic baby carrots. Normally we go through them so fast they don't turn white. When they start to I soak them in water.

Rosey, did you find any mention of formaldehyde anywhere?

As in it's been reported incorrectly or something?

We grow carrots in our garden (organically) and sometimes they get bits of that whiteness if we leave them in the fridge too long. I'm pretty sure it's just them drying out - no different than any other fruit or vegetable starting to turn color as it gets old.
