One of my kids is off to college soon and will need a computer.
Since the love of gaming is high, I was thinking instead of a laptop to get a desktop for the dorm room and an ipad or tablet for class use.

This allows plenty of extras in the desktop - speed, graphics, memory, etc - for college plus gaming (yeah, I shouldn't encourage it but this is what they do as a group) for a better price. Then the ipad/tablet for class notes and recording lectures, etc.

I should mention that we do not own smart phones at all. The most they can do is take pictures - we just can't afford the data packages, contracts, etc required to have the smartphones.

Thoughts? Suggestions?
What would you recommend?

I haven't bought a laptop in three years - ours are doing just fine, but the y won't stand up to the needs at college. I have a tablet, so I have experience with that, but I don't know how a tablet vs ipad vs laptop compares with college.

I've been out of university 4 years and when I went I had a Mac laptop that I used for both in class and home use. It was light enough to easily carry to class with me. I love Apple products personally so that is what I would go with. However depends what they are going to college for - my dh is an engineer and it is difficult to get the programs he needs for apple so he has a Toshiba laptop at work and he has an Asus tablet.

I would see if you can get advice from the university or a current student. If some of the content is delivered electronically (e.g., books are online or something) it might be better to have one kind vs. another.

I know that a lot of schools are offering books for the I-pad so I might look into what the college offers. Might be cheaper then owning the actual book.

If not, I would get just a lap top. I have a mac and it is small enough to take to class for notes, etc but I also loaded windows on it so I can use word, excel etc...

Depends on his needs. If he is planning on gaming, he'll want a desktop computer for that. More schools are moving over to a format where students can bring their tablets. There are also great keyboards you can get to hook onto the tablet so they can be used almost like laptops. As for which one would be best, it really depends on a lot of things. If you go for the desktop for gaming, will he want to connect the tablet with the desktop to do anything? What programs will he want to be able to use. I am the first one to say Apple all the way, but they aren't the best in every situation.
