We have open enrollment starting next month. My employer is trying to mess around with the benefits. Right now we have the same health care as teachers and we pay a certain percentage toward it.

Last week we got this mailer in our boxes that wants us to go to a "talk" about a high deductible HC plan. I already know they SUCK. I know it is what companies are going to but it wouldn't really be good for us due to Chris' meds that he is on. Our contract is up June 30th and we are negotiating. I am worried that the town is going to tell us that we have to take this. It is $150 less then what I pay now BUT it will be way more in out of pocket costs for us.

The thing about this is if we have to take this, we take about a $15,000 pay cut. That is how much the plan is worth. I know they are not going to pay us enough to make up for that. Most towns around us pay more for what I do, as well as the admins. I am so upset and it is making me sick.

I think it is too late to get on the negotiating committee but I am thinking I might have to ask. I get emotional about things so I didn't offer before. Also, I know I would be under a microscope. One thing I know is that I do my job well. I am smart and the teachers like me. I go way beyond just helping with my student. I never finished my masters to be certified and I am thinking I might just have to even though I really would rather be what I am.

And the reason I am talking about this now is that I got an e-mail about the benefits in my work e-mail today. On the bottom it said all insurance is subject to contract negotiations. The teachers contract is all locked up.

I've got my fingers crossed for you. I would hope they would give that as an option, not as the only choice? Our employer offers both. The people who can benefit from high deductible can choose it, but we also have the option of a regular plan, which the large majority of employees choose.

Can your husband get on a plan at his work?

Yes he can but it is a lot more then my plan. That is why I went FT or I would have stayed working PT. The plan was worth it to me. We would have to do the math but I think we would just go on his if we had to.

I shouldn't have even posted this because it is about work and I probably could get in trouble but it is so frustrating to me.

I'm so sorry you're going through all this stress and worry Nora . I can't offer any helpful advice because I don't know the system, but I'll keep my fingers crossed that it comes out better than you fear.

I am not. I am a FT Special Ed para. HOWEVER, I go way above and beyond what I am required to do. In one of the classes, the kids tell me they wish I was their teacher!!

I should have completed my masters when I had the chance but at the time I was so disillusioned. I have half a masters toward Spec. Ed certification and I was getting certified in English. I have most of my classes for classroom management under my belt too.

I also am one semester away from being having an associates in Graphic Design. I did this before I got pregnant with Char. I had to stop because I was so sick so I never went back for my last semester. I could kick myself for that!!

I am queen of going to school I guess. I wish someone would pay me to be a professional student. That is why I LOVE my job. I am always learning new things!!

My district gave us the option to do a high deductible or a regular insurance plan. We chose regular. I hope yours gives you the option.

I'm afraid the whole medical insurance issue is only going to get worse. Politics aside - the Affordable Health Care Act is going to be a nightmare for employers and employees alike.
