Unfortunately, the stupidity of parents doesn't surprise me. This is a tragedy in more than one way.

Even if you get past the gun as a gift thing and teaching your kids at a young age, a gun that can shoot anything that could seriously harm another person is NOT a toy. You don't just leave a gun around you *think* is empty.

I will put my foot in it and say that as tragic as this is, it 'is' the parents fault and not the fact that he received the gun so young... All of my children owned guns young... This did not mean we let them play with them... A gun as a birthday gift is not unusual...letting the child play with it is stupid, plain and simple...I am a firm believer in the simple truth that guns do not kill... Stupidity and evil kill...
