Yesterday Lilly and Camy bought curling irons. Any tips?? They are tired of their in between looking hair. (their words) Their hair is somewhat curly, somewhat wavy, or sometimes straight.

I'm supposed to show them how to use them tonight. I've never used one. I read through the instructions, seems fairly self explanatory, but wondered if there were any special tricks.

It's been a while, but I remember that you're advised to use a heat protecting serum, and not to curl wet hair. And start curling at the tips and roll towards the head rather than the other way round. Which sounds obvious now that I think about it, but yes, I did try the other way. Doesn't work.

I would get them something similar to this to protect their hair from heat damage.

Something to protect the hair from the heat is a must. I watched some tips on youtube to help me figure it out.

I warned them about heat damage. These curling irons have 30 different heat settings. I was going to tell them not to go over level 5. I also told them they are not going to be using it daily. Maybe twice a week. The curling iron came with a sample of moroccan oil too.

My dh thinks it was a mistake buying them. He said I should have stuck to braiding their hair the night before for the crimped look.

You can curl in towards your face or outward also.

Don't start at the very end of the hair. It is already the most dry and damaged, start an inch or two up and let it wrap with the hair, be careful not to crimp though.

I use the kind with the nonstick-like coating (Teflon?) I think it makes a difference. I use mine on high every day and had never had damage that I can see (and my hairdresser didn't know I used one, LOL!)

Yup, I used a curling iron for years on high without any problems. I do use Super Skinny when I flat iron now, but that's more to keep the static away than anything else.

My hairdresser said flat irons are way worse on your hair than curling irons. I've never used anything with curling irons.
