I went and got a massage today. I called at 2:00 and they had an opening tonight. One with a girl or one with a guy. The appt with the guy was at a better time. They asked me if I was ok with having a guy massage therapist (MT). I hadn't even thought that I wouldn't be ok with one, but looking back, guess I was a bit nervous the first time I had a guy massage therapist. Anyway, I know the owner of this particular spa and so she was telling me how hard it is for her husband who is an MT because so many people will refuse to have a male therapist. She said the females get almost 2x as many bookings and they'll be booked up and having to turn away appts while the males struggle to get them. As I laid there, I was thinking "he better not miss my gluts because he thinks I'll be uncomfortable, I stand up all day and my gluts get sore".
Anyway, got me wondering. Would you be ok with a male massage therapist?

Yes I would most definitely be fine with it. In physio school quite often we were in shorts and a sports bra in front of our entire class practicing techniques for assessment and treatment on one another so I am not shy that way. Also, being a PT I know how I feel when I have clients and I am doing my job, looking at them as a client, not as a member of the opposite sex and I am sure the majority of MTs are the same. But I can see how some people may be uncomfortable with it based on their upbringing or past experiences. We only have one male PT working at our clinic and he is only part time so not many hours but as far as I know he has only had one or two clients that have asked to be treated by a female.

To me the gender is less important than the personality and technique. I've had more female massage therapists who I wished weren't touching me. That would be my biggest criteria for choosing, that, and my husband's opinion. If he didn't want me to have a male MT then I wouldn't. But he's OK with it so I'm fine.

My regular MT is a woman and I love her. But when I used to go the Chiropractor I would ask for the male they had. I have a pretty high pain tolerance and I liked the pressure he used.

I wouldn't have a problem with it. Probably would really like it as most females can't get into my muscles quite the way I would like them to.

I have never had a massage, and never plan on it. DH went once because someone gave him a GC for a massage. It was a female, not that it bothered him to have a female MT, but afterwards he said never again! Apparently he doesn't like massages...

Most of the MT's around me are female. I think I would like a male MT because they have stronger hands. I always have the biggest knots and my females always have trouble!! I could actually use one now!!

Nope, not a problem. I have actually had male MT's in the past.
But my DH feels weird having a male MT though!

I've had both as has my husband.... however, I can say that for a long time I was very uncomfortable with a male massage therapist. For me, because of poor decisions by other men, I was uncomfortable with any type of touch from a man, you can imagine that receiving a massage puts you in a rather vulnerable situation...... This often comes up with both my male and female clients, discomfort with first the vulnerability of having a massage, but then also being touched in an intimate, although professional way, by someone of the same sex in which you have bad associations with..... Does that make sense?

I'm so tempted to get one today too. My baddie shoulder is a lot better (well it jolly well ought to be after 2 months ) but it still catches me.
