well, I'm not going out and taking various measurements around the yard. I'd say 2 ft. When it's blown around you're supposed to take several measurements and average them.

actually, some of what people remember is probably not quite accurate. Our memories are malleable (and things seem different when you're a kid besides) so if you really want to know you'd have to look up the weather history.

Anyway - went out to do some shoveling and the drift outside my front door came up to my knees. Over by the cars at the top of the driveway the drift was about waist high. There's still have the driveway left to shovel.

Here you go Tam, Indiana blizzard of 1978. http://www.bing.com/images/search?q=india na+blizza...

My parents have pictures of our overhead garage doors open, but the snow was up to the roof. All you saw when you raised the garage door was snow. I remember my dad digging a hole out of the house so he could climb up the snow to the roof. No ladder needed. He was afraid the weight of the snow would cave in the roof, so he shoveled the roof. Crazy!

I'm not talking an occasional storm. I mean regular winters. My husband swears by the 'we used to get so much snow' but I really think it's a case of nostalgia mixing in with the perception of a kid.

We got about 38" of snow. Poor Chris took 6 hours trying to clear it and had to stop. Our snow blower is old and just didn't like the amount. He even snowplowed last night after dinner but it wasn't enough. He should have done it before bed instead!! It was nuts!! I have some of the photos on my phone that I will download later.

So pretty Tam, even if it is a nuisance.

Tell me, when it is drifted halfway up the door like that, is the house warmer? Does it have insulating properties?

Kathleen - nope, no loss of electric. They've done a lot of tree/branch trimming last year around the lines so that probably helped. And the snow was powdery and light, rather than wet and heavy.

Nora - we have a snowblower and my friend fixed it before the winter but last time I used it, it worked for quite awhile then quit on me and wouldn't stay going. I don't wth the problem is! Hubby thinks my friend can't fix things right. He's been working on small motors for decades.

Rosey - it probably does but it's not high enough to come up the walls. The house is probably about 3 feet off the ground - basically a crawl space under it. It probably helps insulate for underneath though.

I still think we got more snow when I was young!

I think the last 20 years or so, the snows have been more sparse, and less of it. Like last winter, we had one significant snow, and that was a few days before Christmas. After that, just a really light snow.

So far this winter, we had snow on New Years Eve, 7 1/2 inches, and then almost 2 weeks ago, we had 3 inches. Since then, it as been two warm for snow, but no other moisture, whice we desparately need! We are in a drought, so we would need a LOT of moisture to overcome it....

we lost power friday night for over 4 hours.

i said to hubby today, if we had our usual 5-6 feet of snow then we'd be upwards of 8 feet in spots, so glad most of the snow had left and we just had a bit in the yard.

Same here & it makes me sad. I've always said "if it has to be cold - it might as well snow!" And I love living in an area with the change of seasons.... I wouldn't want winter weather year 'round, but enjoy the extremes of each of them.

Would love tons of snow, not only for selfish reasons but the draught conditions continue as ponds, lakes & creeks are down & farmers long for more ground moisture.

I had to shovel the roof because rain will make the snow heavy and it was already heavy up there since it was nearly to my knee at the deepest spots.

I certainly didn't want the roof to collapse on my scrap area.

We did!! But the official number in our area was 33". We measured the roof outside of Char's window where it didn't really drift and it was 38"!! Chris shoveled the roof yesterday because water was coming in again through our new kitchen window. We had the roof replaced a couple weeks ago, thinking that was the problem and now we have to go back to the drawing board. The siding that was put on by a previous owner might be the problem.

We are getting rain right now. We had today off from school again because they just couldn't plow all the roads and clear the schools. I saw plows get stuck trying to plow our road!! And the cities, like Hartford, had to bring dump trucks in to transport the snow elsewhere. They had no where to really plow it so it has been rough. Getting this much snow all at once has been interesting. At least we didn't lose power!!!

I can't imagine over 3 feet of snow in one fall. I still get excited by 3 flakes.

I'm very thankful you didn't lose power too. A lot of people in the NE are still without power, aren't they?

Wow what a storm. Our snow has been so pittely and sad. My kids have never known a snow day. We use to live for those as kids. You where garented to get at least one each year. But even with the lake effect we get we got the back end of all the storms.
