I guess 4th grade is the time to do a big project in science? Any suggestions? We have no clue on what to do and weren't given suggestions.

At least one of my boys has made it to regionals at Ball State for the last 6 years. This year Zach is going for "Which type of soil best netrulizes acid rain? Sod, Cultivated field or riverbank (clay)" (8th grade)
Last year he went with one having to do with how different types of music affected the behavior of rabbits. He not only charted their behavior but also their eating & drinking habits. (7th grade)
One year he did one on global warming. (6th grade)
One year he did "Can the sun bake my bacon" and he built a sun oven and baked bacon in the snow. (5th grade)
Isaac did one on how different materials compost. (4th grade)
Noah did one on the runoff you get from different cround covers. (5th grade)
Those are just some ideas from what we have done. They have done more, I just can't remember them all.

Camille thought about doing a science fair project this year with a friend, but the friend decided not to.
Their project was going to be whether or not our mood changes our color choice in clothing.
Another one that she considered was whether or not seeds would germinate in liquids other then water. (vinegar, milk, juice)

My DD won first place (but didn't go farther, like Stephanie's boys) in 4th grade with "Do different watt light bulbs produce different heat?"
The only things she needed were a lamp, light bulbs, an electric thermometer (for outside temps), a timer, and a ruler (to ensure the lamp was always the correct distance, as we used a bent-arm desk lamp).

She's going to do: do seeds germinate with anything other than water?
