So my son had that class/lab today. Again he needed help and had to stay longer than the class to work on it.
He looked up his grade from last week's lab that he stayed for 3 hours on Monday to get help. He made sure he had it submitted to the server, etc. And his grade on blackboard shows a -1. Apparently you get that if your lab is incomplete or not submitted by the end of the lab. But was told he could come in Monday for the help. He thought he ended up doing really well. (Like, he thought he might even get a 100.) Today, he again needed help but the professor had to leave. He had to pass it in as incomplete. Which means he's screwed again. WTF.
I'm going to be contacting the disabilities coordinator (not sure if it has any bearing, but wth) and the department head for a meeting.

I just sent the email to the disabilities coordinator and the dept head. I also included what the college's mission statement consists of.

That sounds ridiculously inflexible. It's not as though he's giving up or anything, he just has problems understanding what the professor wants. I hope you get somewhere with the meeting.

Last year he got a tutor halfway through the sememster but by then 1. it may have been too late to bring the grade up and 2. the tutor didn't seem to understand very well what this professor wanted either.

that stinks. Hopefully the disabilities dept will help out. Make sure you go to http://www.ratemyprofessors.com and write it up. I know a lot of college students around here look at it.

that was one thing I really hated about several of my college professors - it didn't matter how bad they were at teaching, if you failed, it was your fault, not theirs. and I swear one of them set out to fail his students on purpose.

That does confuse me. Surely the progress of the students is a reflection on the professor too? Whether it be by word of mouth or officially, he's not going to want to look bad. I wonder how the other students are getting on with him. Do you know?

I think the students evaluate the professors at the end of the semester so apparently he must be doing okay.
It's not an easy program and quite a few (maybe even almosst half?) end up dropping out in the first year and changing majors.

Absolutely agree with Gramma - that is NOT OK. If it's a hard subject then that's all the more reason for the professor to be more flexible and patient. He sounds pretty crappy to me. Sorry!

For the program (not the specific class necessarily), yes. Lots of kids sign up thinking it'll be fun or whatever because it's video games and then when reality hits that it's a challenging program, many drop it.
It's called the Animation and Graphic Games Program.

Yeah, hubby is pretty pi$$ed about it too.
It's not like it's a student not making the effort. He stayed for 3 freaking extra hours last Monday. And we were having a snowstorm!

UPDATE again - I haven't heard back on the emails I sent however, I got an email from my son today (he's at school right now) and the professor updated his grade on blackboard to 80/100. He was still penalized for submitting it late.
It's better than before but I still don't understand penalizing a student when they needed the help.

Was the lab assigned on the day it was late? Or could your son have sought help earlier than the day it was due? If he had the opportunity to seek help earlier, but stayed late on the day it was due to work on it, then yes, he was late.
I hope your son is able to resolve the problems he's having, and get the help he needs.

No, it was due the same day as the lab. They had to do the lab within that time period. His rubric (?) says that it's that way for the first two. I think after that it's due by the next lab.

His schedule for this class is Monday - lecture. Wed -lecture and lab. His first week started on a Tuesday (Jan 22) so his first class was lecture and lab. He stayed after his lecture the following Monday for another lab (not on his schedule) so he could get the help. The professor told him he could come Monday for help.
