For those of you who had to have indoor recess, what were some of the things you liked to do. Looking at the weather, looks like we'll be having it all week. We have to be above 20 degrees to go out. The high for today was 15. The high for the school week is 22. Praying that 22 hits during a recess.

EDIT: I teach 6-7 year olds and have 25 of them. They are a competitive group.

Not sure of age group but with my 4 and 5 year olds we make a hopscotch on the floor with tape. We do various relay races-crawling, crab walk, duck walk, summer saults, etc. We exercise letting each child choose what to do- hop on one foot, jumping jacks, jump up and down, stand on your head (knees on elbows), etc.
We do four square, hoola hoops, march to music-kids choose how we march, hopping, backwards, etc.
The last five minutes of our scheduled time is sit and rest time to calm them down before their next activity.

i've been at indoor recess in my son's kindergarten class and it's free play at certain centers. some days it's sitting and coloring or reading depending on if it's recess or lunch too.

The kids go outside pretty much no matter how cold it is. If it's raining they are inside. If it's -40C with the windchill then school is supposed to be cancelled.

I know last week on a few days it was really cold, felt like -30 with the windchill and the kids still went outside.

Um.... the only thing I remember about indoor recess was when I went to a teeny tiny elementary school. (grades 1 - 6 with 4 classrooms, no cafeteria, there was no office and the principal was also a teacher. LOL) Unless it was indoor gym... maybe that was it. Makes more sense because he had us lined up in the hallway doing calisthenics.

20F is below freezing. Don't ask me to convert it lol. I know each place is different as 20 in some places would be considered nice, but we're hitting record lows here. I think it was -3F today.

Depends on the class. Do they need physical activity ( jumping, running, bending on the spot) anything for 30 seconds , and then a mental cool down. ( joke, lying on the floor gasping) you know recovery! Sorry not much help. How about a teacher read book of a really cool book?

Hugs, hope it warms up soon.

Same rule applies where we live, too. The kids only go outside if it's 20*F or above.

Apparently that translates to -6.66667*C.

We can't leave our classroom and we can't move our desks out of the way. They were asking me all day if they had PE because they wanted to be moving more. We do read aloud, but not as part of recess time.

We used to have stuff in our classroom like blocks, lego, coloring, etc to play with but we were also able to go play in the gym. But that being said we live in Saskatchewan so are used to the cold and didn't often get to stay in!

Can't move the desks??

Because you can't have the kids move them? Can you team up with another teacher - one watch both classes while the other clears the room, then each use the room that was cleared?

They are tables that sit 2 kids and are heavy to move around. I tend to get hurt just walking, don't want to get hurt moving desks and the other 1st grade teacher has RA and other chronic health conditions, so it's not feasible.

Simon says? Or small groups playing charades? It lets them stand up and not too much room is needed.
