I had a message on ancestry.com from someone. I finally got a good answer in my search about my father's birth but I'm no closer to finding out. I will have to go down and provide my birth certficate and a certified copy of his death certificate to find out about his pre-adoption birth record.
I had been trying to get information about who was born on his birthday to see if I could narrow it down. Last year I got a name and I wondered if it was him. Turns out that wasn't the only male born. There was another one and that record is restricted. That one must be my father. I was barking up the wrong tree with the other name. Apparently he was not an o'neill.

It doesn't sound like you are too far from finding out. Just need to break the right barriers lol. I hope you get more info soon!

It's just a matter of me going to get a copy of his death certficate ($15) and going down to the office in MA. Hopefully, when I do, my birth certificate won't be an issue because the one I have is a wallet sized laminated one. That's how RI issued it to my mother. (I think she had to have them replaced.) It's an $18 fee for the record to go in person. I also have to bring my marriage certificate as proof of name change.

Luckily he was born in a state that changed access laws a few years ago.

Yes, those are awesome!!! Lucky you! Thanks for the offer. It'll probably be awhile before I get down to see about the birth record. The office is on the other side of Boston. I'll have hubby drive me and we can make a day trip of it. I still haven't signed up for the American Canadian Genealogical Society. Maybe I'll get to it this summer when I can go and check out the records.
